Case law, statutes, secondary sources and, increasingly, AI assistants that answer the question and cite the authority.
6 legal research products
Listed alphabetically. A listing is not a recommendation, and sponsored placements are labelled. Links go straight to the vendor.
Research combined with news, dockets and transactional analytics.
Research with visual citation mapping, strong on Indian and US case law.
LexisNexis research platform, the other incumbent, with its own AI layer.
State trial court records and analytics, an area the incumbents cover thinly.
Case law, statutes and secondary sources from Thomson Reuters, one of the two incumbents.
Research across many jurisdictions, now including Fastcase.
Is it worth paying for research when free sources exist?
For anything where being wrong is expensive, yes. Free sources are getting better and cover primary law well in several jurisdictions, but editorial treatment, citation checking and knowing whether authority still stands are what the paid platforms are actually selling. The question is not free against paid, it is how much of the paid platform your practice genuinely uses.
How has AI changed legal research?
It has changed the interface more than the underlying sources. The assistants now answer the question and cite the authority, which is faster than running searches and reading down a list. What has not changed is that you still have to read the authority. Every serious platform now has an AI layer, so the differentiator is the quality of the underlying content, not the assistant sitting on top of it.
How this directory works. Products are selected and described by the Legal Desire editorial team. A listing is not a recommendation, and descriptions say what a product is for rather than how good it is, because the honest answer depends on your firm.
The directory carries both editorial entries and commercial placements. Anything commercial is labelled as sponsored on the page and in the structured data, so you always know which is which. Vendors can apply for a listing or a sponsorship.
