How is e-discovery priced, and why does it vary so much?
Traditionally per gigabyte of data hosted per month, which is why costs surprise people: the bill scales with data volume rather than with the value of the matter. Several products here price differently, on users or on a subscription, specifically because per-gigabyte pricing punishes you for the size of the collection. Ask for a worked example on a matter the size of one you actually run.
Can a small litigation team use these?
Some of them, yes. The platforms built for the largest cases assume a dedicated litigation support function. Others are designed to be driven by the case team, which is what a small firm needs. The question to ask is who is expected to run it: if the answer is a specialist you do not employ, that is the real cost.
