The most common remote legal jobs in 2026 are contract attorney and document review work, in-house counsel roles, legal operations, legal engineering and compliance. Hiring comes mainly from alternative legal service providers such as Axiom and Consilio, freelance platforms such as LAWCLERK, distributed law firms and legal tech companies. For US lawyers, ABA Formal Opinion 495 confirms you can usually work from a state where you are not licensed.
This guide sets out the main roles, who hires for them, what they pay where reliable data exists, and the licensing rules you need to understand before you move or take a remote job across state lines.
What remote legal jobs are available?
| Role | Law licence needed? | Typical employers | Pay benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contract attorney (project or part-time) | Yes | Axiom, LAWCLERK, Lawyers On Demand | Varies by project; BLS median for all lawyers $159,670 (May 2025) |
| Document review attorney | Usually yes | E-discovery vendors such as Consilio and Epiq | Hourly; one remote Consilio listing seen in October 2026 paid $23 an hour |
| Remote in-house counsel | Yes | Companies, often via ALSPs | See our in-house counsel pay guide |
| Legal operations specialist | No | Corporate legal departments, ALSPs | $76,000 to $100,750 (Robert Half, accessed October 2026) |
| Legal operations manager | No | Corporate legal departments | $86,000 to $122,250 (Robert Half, accessed October 2026) |
| Litigation and eDiscovery specialist | No | Law firms, vendors | $67,750 to $96,500 (Robert Half, accessed October 2026) |
| Compliance officer | No | Banks, insurers, tech companies | BLS median $80,730 (May 2025) |
| Legal engineer | No (often JD-holders) | Legal tech companies, ALSPs, large firms | No reliable public benchmark |
Robert Half figures run from the low end (new to the role) to the high end (extensive experience) of its salary guide ranges. Remote roles are usually priced on the same scale as office roles.
Contract and part-time attorney work
This is the largest pool of remote work for lawyers. Axiom says it offers remote work to its part-time attorneys and that they are “full-fledged Axiom employees” with prorated salaries and benefits, not freelancers. It describes a network of more than 14,000 legal professionals. LAWCLERK is a marketplace where law firms hire freelance US attorneys for briefs, research and contract review. Only bar-admitted lawyers in good standing can join, and it reports more than 12,000 verified attorneys.
Document review
Large litigation and investigations generate millions of documents that need human review. Vendors staff these projects with licensed attorneys working remotely on review platforms. The work is steady during big matters and thin between them. Pay is hourly and often modest: a Consilio remote “Document Review Professional” listing we saw on Glassdoor in October 2026 required an active US bar licence and paid $23 an hour.
Remote in-house counsel
Fully remote in-house roles exist, especially at tech companies and scale-ups, but they attract heavy competition. Many lawyers get there through secondments from an ALSP. Our guide to in-house counsel covers pay and the move from private practice.
Legal operations
Legal ops staff run the business side of a legal department: budgets, outside counsel management, technology and data. The Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) groups the work into 12 core functions, from financial management to knowledge management. Robert Half puts legal operations directors at $152,000 to $200,500. Read our legal operations career guide for routes in.
Legal engineering
Legal engineers design workflows, automation and AI tools for legal teams. Many are former lawyers. The work is project-based and suits remote teams well. Our piece on whether junior lawyers should become legal engineers weighs the trade-offs.
Compliance
The BLS reports 436,400 compliance officer jobs with a median of $80,730 in May 2025. The typical entry route is a bachelor’s degree. Regulated sectors such as banking, insurance and fintech often run compliance teams remotely.
Which employers hire for remote legal jobs?
Alternative legal service providers (ALSPs)
- Axiom: flexible and part-time attorney roles, with remote options.
- Consilio: e-discovery, document review and flexible legal talent. Consilio bought the UK’s Lawyers On Demand (LOD) in 2023; at the time LOD had more than 4,500 lawyers, legal engineers, legal ops consultants and paralegals across 25 countries, according to The Global Legal Post.
- Epiq: e-discovery and legal services, with remote roles posted on major job sites.
Freelance platforms
- LAWCLERK: freelance work for US-licensed attorneys, supervised by the hiring firm.
Distributed law firms
- FisherBroyles calls itself a pioneer of remote lawyering, with more than 150 partners working from any location. It hires at partner level and asks for at least seven years’ experience, much of it at an Am Law 100 or 200, Silver Circle or Magic Circle firm, plus portable business.
- Pierson Ferdinand launched in January 2024 with more than 130 partners on a distributed model in which lawyers can work virtually or in an office.
Both firms recruit experienced partners with clients, not juniors. Junior lawyers will find more openings through ALSPs and freelance platforms.
Legal tech companies
Legal tech employers hire lawyers into product, sales, customer success and legal engineering roles. Clio, for example, lists remote roles across the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland and several European countries, while describing its approach as hybrid.
Can a lawyer work remotely from a state where they are not licensed?
Usually yes, within limits. On 16 December 2020 the ABA issued Formal Opinion 495, which interprets Model Rule 5.5 on unauthorised practice. It says a lawyer may practise the law of their licensing jurisdiction while physically located somewhere else, provided they:
- do not establish an office or other systematic presence in the local jurisdiction;
- do not hold out that they are available to practise law there;
- do not provide legal services on local matters unless otherwise authorised; and
- are in a jurisdiction that has not ruled such practice unauthorised.
The opinion is guidance, not binding law. State rules decide the question. Several jurisdictions have taken similar positions, including Florida (Supreme Court advisory opinion, May 2021) and New Jersey (October 2021). Utah, Maine, Arizona, New Hampshire and Minnesota had already permitted the practice. California’s bar has advised its lawyers to check the rules of wherever they are physically located.
Practical licensing checks before you go remote
- Check the unauthorised practice rule and any ethics opinion in the state where you will live.
- Keep your licence active and meet CLE in the state where you are admitted.
- Do not list your home address as an office on letterhead or websites.
- Confirm malpractice cover applies where you work.
- For in-house roles, check whether your state requires in-house counsel registration.
Non-lawyer roles such as legal ops, compliance and legal engineering do not raise these issues.
Where should you apply for remote legal jobs?
- The Legal Desire jobs board for legal roles at firms, companies and organisations.
- ALSP talent portals at Axiom, Consilio and Lawyers On Demand. Register once and you are matched to projects.
- LAWCLERK for freelance attorney projects.
- LinkedIn and Indeed, filtered to “Remote”, with exact titles such as “remote contract attorney” or “legal operations manager remote”.
- Company career pages of legal tech firms.
If you are earlier in your career, our guide to remote paralegal jobs covers support roles, and entry-level legal jobs that don’t need a law degree lists ways in without a JD.
Frequently asked questions
What legal jobs can be done fully remotely?
Contract attorney work, document review, legal research and writing, legal operations, compliance and legal engineering are the most common fully remote legal jobs. Some in-house counsel roles are also fully remote. Litigation roles that involve court appearances are more often hybrid.
Can I practise law remotely from another state?
Under ABA Formal Opinion 495 (December 2020), a US lawyer can generally practise the law of their licensing state while living elsewhere, if they do not set up an office or hold themselves out locally. The opinion is not binding, so check the rules of the state where you live. Florida and New Jersey have issued similar guidance.
How much do remote contract attorneys earn?
Pay varies widely by project and experience. Document review is at the low end, with one remote Consilio listing in October 2026 paying $23 an hour. Experienced contract and part-time lawyers at ALSPs such as Axiom are salaried employees, with pay prorated to their hours.
Do I need a law degree for remote legal jobs?
No. Legal operations, compliance, e-discovery and legal engineering roles often do not require a JD. Robert Half puts legal operations specialists at $76,000 to $100,750, and the BLS median for compliance officers was $80,730 in May 2025.
Are there remote legal jobs outside the US?
Yes. Lawyers On Demand, now part of Consilio, works across 25 countries including the UK. Legal tech companies such as Clio hire remotely in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australia. Licensing rules differ, so check with your regulator, such as the SRA in England and Wales.
Bottom line
Remote legal work is widely available, but the entry points differ. Licensed lawyers find it fastest through ALSPs and freelance platforms, while non-lawyers do well in legal ops, compliance and e-discovery. Before you relocate, check the practice rules where you will physically live, not just where you are admitted.
