You can work in law without a law degree. The best-paid entry-level legal jobs that don’t need a JD include paralegal (BLS median $62,890 in May 2025), court reporter ($72,420), claims adjuster ($78,000) and compliance officer ($80,730). Legal secretary and title examiner roles accept a high school diploma, while legal operations and e-discovery reward tech skills.
Below is a side-by-side table of the main roles with pay and entry requirements, followed by how to break into each one, and the UK routes that do the same job.
Which legal jobs don’t require a law degree?
Pay figures are national medians from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook for May 2025 unless marked otherwise. BLS does not track legal operations or e-discovery as separate occupations, so we use Robert Half salary guide ranges for those.
| Role | Median or range (US) | Typical entry requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paralegal or legal assistant | $62,890 | Associate degree or paralegal certificate | BLS, May 2025 |
| Entry-level paralegal | $47,000 to $59,000 | Certificate or degree, little experience | Robert Half, accessed October 2026 |
| Legal secretary or administrative assistant | $55,570 | High school diploma plus legal training | BLS, May 2025 |
| Court reporter or simultaneous captioner | $72,420 | Postsecondary certificate; licence in many states | BLS, May 2025 |
| Claims adjuster, examiner or investigator | $78,000 | High school diploma; state licence often required | BLS, May 2025 |
| Compliance officer | $80,730 | Bachelor’s degree | BLS, May 2025 |
| Title examiner, abstractor or searcher | $58,650 | Often a high school diploma | O*NET, using BLS 2025 wage data |
| Legal operations specialist | $76,000 to $100,750 | Bachelor’s degree plus business or tech skills | Robert Half, accessed October 2026 |
| Litigation and eDiscovery specialist | $67,750 to $96,500 | Paralegal or IT background; certification helps | Robert Half, accessed October 2026 |
Robert Half ranges run from new to the role at the low end to highly experienced at the high end. Medians are the midpoint of all workers in the job, not starting pay, so expect to start below them.
How do you become a paralegal without a law degree?
Paralegal work is the most common way into law without a JD. BLS counts about 404,900 paralegal and legal assistant jobs, with around 40,800 openings a year projected from 2025 to 2035. Growth is flat, so openings come mainly from people leaving or retiring.
- Education: an associate degree or certificate is typical. A certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program is the cleanest route in California.
- Credential: the NALA Certified Paralegal exam accepts graduates of paralegal programs, bachelor’s holders with a year of experience, or people with five years’ experience and continuing education.
- Pay: federal government paralegals had a median of $81,470 in May 2025, well above the $61,770 median in law firms.

What other entry-level legal jobs are worth considering?
Legal secretary
Legal secretaries prepare summonses, complaints, motions and subpoenas under a lawyer’s or paralegal’s supervision. BLS says a high school diploma is typical, with extra training in legal terminology. The catch: BLS projects a 5% decline in these jobs from 2025 to 2035. Treat it as a stepping stone toward paralegal work.
Court reporter
Court reporters and captioners create verbatim records of proceedings. Training is usually a postsecondary certificate, and BLS notes many states require a licence or certification based on speed and accuracy tests. There were 19,900 jobs in 2025. Employment is projected flat, partly because of AI transcription, though demand for real-time captioning is expected to grow.
Claims adjuster or examiner
Claims staff investigate insurance claims, interview witnesses and assess liability. It is legal-adjacent work that uses the same reasoning as litigation. BLS says a high school diploma is typical, though some employers prefer a degree. Licensing varies by state: some require pre-licensing courses, an exam or both.
Compliance officer
Compliance officers make sure organisations meet legal and regulatory requirements. This is the best-paid role in our table, but it usually needs a bachelor’s degree. Finance, healthcare and tech are the main employers.
Title examiner
Title examiners search public records to confirm who owns property and whether liens or claims attach to it. O*NET reports a 2025 median of $58,650, about 57,400 workers in 2024 and 5,400 projected openings from 2024 to 2034. Over half of surveyed workers said a high school diploma was required.
Legal operations
Legal ops staff manage the budgets, vendors, data and technology of legal departments. It suits people from finance, project management or IT. Robert Half lists legal ops managers at $86,000 to $122,250. Read our legal operations career guide for how to move in.
E-discovery
E-discovery specialists collect, process and produce electronic evidence for litigation. Many start as paralegals or IT support staff. The ACEDS Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) credential is widely recognised; ACEDS lists the standard exam package at $1,495. Many of these roles can be done from home, as our guide to remote paralegal jobs explains.
How do you get your first legal job without a law degree?
- Pick a lane. Admin and support (legal secretary, paralegal), insurance and property (claims, title), or business and tech (compliance, legal ops, e-discovery).
- Get the minimum credential. A paralegal certificate, a court reporting certificate, or a state adjuster licence, depending on the role.
- Learn the software. Practice management, e-filing and review platforms appear in most job ads.
- Start where hiring is broad. Insurance companies, title firms, government agencies and large firms train new staff.
- Use legal job boards. The Legal Desire jobs board and NALA’s Career Center list support roles.
- Keep the JD option open. Many paralegals go to law school later. In the US that means law school after a bachelor’s degree, then the bar exam.
What are the UK equivalents?
England and Wales offer more formal non-degree routes than the US, and some lead to full qualification.
| UK route | What it involves | Pay or cost |
|---|---|---|
| Paralegal | Unregulated role; entry via NALP (National Association of Licensed Paralegals) or CILEX qualifications, a degree, or experience | £28,000 to £32,000 starting, per Prospects (March 2025) |
| Level 3 paralegal apprenticeship | Typically 24 months of paid work with part-time study | Government funding up to £8,000 (version 1.2) |
| Chartered legal executive (CILEX Lawyer) | CILEX Professional Qualification plus at least 2,300 hours of qualifying experience | Experience is gained in paid legal work |
| Solicitor apprenticeship | Level 7 apprenticeship lasting three to six years, ending in the SQE | No tuition cost; £14,000 to £28,000 in year one, per the Law Society |
The Law Society says apprentices typically need five GCSEs, including maths and English, plus three A-levels or equivalent. Our full guide to becoming a solicitor in the UK without a degree explains each route in detail.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest-paying legal job without a law degree?
Among BLS-tracked roles, compliance officers had the highest median in May 2025 at $80,730, followed by claims adjusters and examiners at $78,000. Experienced legal operations managers can earn more: Robert Half puts the role at $86,000 to $122,250. Senior legal ops directors reach $152,000 to $200,500.
Can I work in a law firm without a degree?
Yes. Legal secretaries usually need only a high school diploma plus legal training, and some paralegals are hired on experience alone. A paralegal certificate or associate degree improves your chances and your pay.
Is paralegal a good entry-level legal job?
It is the most common one, with about 40,800 openings a year projected by BLS. The median was $62,890 in May 2025, and government and corporate roles pay more. Overall job numbers are expected to stay flat as AI handles more routine research and drafting.
Do I need a licence for any of these jobs?
Court reporters need a licence or certification in many states, and claims adjusters often need a state licence. Paralegals are not licensed in most states, though California sets education and training rules under Business and Professions Code section 6450.
Can I become a lawyer without a law degree in the UK?
Yes. A solicitor apprenticeship takes three to six years and ends with the SQE, with no tuition cost to the apprentice. The CILEX route leads to qualification as a chartered legal executive, a lawyer in their own right.
Bottom line
A law degree is not the only door into law. Paralegal work is the main route, but compliance, claims and court reporting pay more at the median, and legal ops and e-discovery reward tech skills. In the UK, apprenticeships and CILEX can take you all the way to qualified lawyer.
