A paralegal certificate program is a short course of paralegal training, lasting anywhere from 14 weeks to two years depending on pace, and costing roughly $3,000 to $26,000 at the programs we checked in October 2026. It is worth it if you already hold a degree and want a fast route into legal work, or if you plan to work in California, where an ABA-approved certificate meets the state’s paralegal rules.
This guide explains the main types of certificate, what named programs cost, how to choose one and when a certificate is not the best move.
What is a paralegal certificate program?
It is an education credential, not a licence. You complete a set of courses in legal research, writing, litigation and other practice areas, and the school awards a certificate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a certificate in paralegal studies, alongside an associate degree, as the typical entry route for paralegals.
A certificate is different from certification. Certification means passing a professional exam, such as NALA’s Certified Paralegal (CP). Many people do a certificate first, then sit a certification exam. Our guide on how to become a paralegal covers both.
What types of paralegal certificate are there?
Post-baccalaureate certificates
These require a bachelor’s degree for entry. They skip general education and focus on legal skills, which is why they are short. UCLA Extension, for example, requires a bachelor’s degree for its certificate, and George Washington University requires a bachelor’s degree and a 3.0 GPA for its graduate certificate.
Undergraduate and community college certificates
These accept students without a degree or with an associate degree. Some sit inside a two-year program. Elgin Community College’s ABA-approved certificate is 23 credit hours for degree holders, or can be combined with an associate degree over two years of full-time study.
ABA-approved programs
The American Bar Association approves paralegal programs that meet its guidelines. Its Standing Committee on Paralegals directory lists 222 approved programs. Approval is a quality signal and has practical benefits, covered below. Our dedicated guide to ABA-approved paralegal programs lists options by format.
Online programs
Many programs now run fully online. Some use live classes, such as UCLA Extension’s Zoom-based certificate and UC Irvine’s remote program. Others are largely self-paced. Boston University’s online certificate uses two-week modules with set deadlines and about 10 to 14 hours of work a week.
How much do paralegal certificate programs cost?
Prices vary by a factor of eight across the programs below. All figures come from each program’s own pages, accessed in October 2026.
| Program | ABA-approved? | Length | Entry requirement | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elgin Community College (Illinois) | Yes | About 1 year full time (23 credits) | Degree, or combine with associate | $135 per credit hour, about $3,105 for 23 credits before aid |
| Boston University Online Paralegal Certificate | No | 14 weeks | No formal degree requirement stated | $3,995 |
| UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education | Yes | 16 weeks (compressed) or 3 to 24 months (part time) | Associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree | About $8,590 to $9,224, plus $125 application fee |
| UCLA Extension Paralegal Studies | Yes | 2 quarters (daytime) or 4 quarters (evening) | Bachelor’s degree | $7,995 tuition plus about $1,889 books, about $9,884 total (2026) |
| George Washington University Graduate Certificate | Yes | As little as 9 months (18 credits) | Bachelor’s degree, 3.0 GPA | $1,439 per credit, about $25,972 to $26,007 with fees (2026-27) |
Watch the extras. Books, application fees and exam fees add up. If you plan to sit NALA’s CP exam after your program, the standard fee is $325 for members and $375 for non-members, per NALA’s 2025 FAQs. Boston University notes that federal student loans do not apply to its non-credit certificate. Check aid eligibility before you enrol.
Does ABA approval matter?
It depends on where you will work and which credentials you want.
- California. B&P Code section 6450 lists an ABA-approved certificate as one way to qualify. The alternatives are a program with at least 24 semester units of law-related courses at an accredited school, or a degree plus a year of supervised experience and an attorney declaration.
- NALA CP exam. Graduates of ABA-approved programs qualify under Category 1. So do graduates of post-baccalaureate certificate programs and some other programs, per NALA’s 2025 certification FAQs.
- NALS Professional Paralegal. NALS lets ABA-approved graduates sit the PP exam without the five years of experience otherwise required.
Outside these cases, many employers care more about the school’s reputation and your skills. Boston University says over 75% of paralegal certificate programs are not ABA-approved, and it chose a shorter skills-based model on purpose.
How do you choose a paralegal certificate program?
Work through these questions in order.
- Where will you work? If California, choose a program that meets section 6450. ABA approval is the simplest way.
- Do you have a degree? If yes, a post-baccalaureate program is the fastest path. If no, look at community college certificates or associate degrees.
- How do you learn? Live online classes suit people who need structure. Self-paced suits people working full time.
- What does it really cost? Add tuition, books, fees and exam costs. Check whether federal aid applies.
- What practical training is included? Look for legal research database access, drafting assignments and internships. Boston University includes Westlaw access, for example.
- What are the outcomes? Ask about job placement, employer partners and alumni networks. Treat unsupported placement claims with care.
- Does it prepare you for certification? Check whether graduates qualify for NALA’s CP or NFPA’s exams.
Is a paralegal certificate worth it?
When it is worth it
- You hold a bachelor’s degree in another field and want a fast, credible switch into legal work.
- You plan to work in California, where qualifying education is required.
- You want to sit the NALA CP exam without first building years of experience.
- You want to test legal work before committing to law school. Our law school timeline guide shows what that bigger commitment involves.
When it may not be
- You already work in a law office and your employer will train and promote you.
- The program costs far more than local alternatives without clear extra value.
- You are in the UK, where different qualifications apply (see below).
The pay return
The median paralegal earned $62,890 in May 2025, according to BLS OEWS data. The 10th percentile was $44,740. Against those figures, a $4,000 to $10,000 certificate can pay for itself quickly if it gets you hired. A $26,000 graduate certificate needs a stronger case, such as access to a well-paying market. Starting pay is lower than the median: the State Bar of Texas 2025 survey reported a median starting salary of $35,110 in 2024. See our paralegal salary guide for pay by state and employer.
What about paralegal qualifications in the UK?
US-style certificates carry little weight in the UK. The main options there are:
- NALP diplomas. The National Association of Licensed Paralegals is an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation. It offers diplomas at Levels 3, 4, 5 and 7.
- CILEX CPQ. CILEX says its three-stage qualification can make you a lawyer in three years, with costs from £13,000. The Foundation stage leads to paralegal status.
- Apprenticeships. Level 3 and Level 5 paralegal apprenticeships combine work and study over about two years, per the National Careers Service.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a paralegal certificate take?
Intensive programs can take 14 to 16 weeks, such as Boston University’s online certificate and UC Irvine’s compressed option. Part-time and university programs take 6 to 12 months or longer. Community college certificates often take about a year full time.
How much does a paralegal certificate cost?
Among programs we checked in October 2026, costs ranged from about $3,105 at Elgin Community College to about $26,000 at George Washington University. Mid-priced ABA-approved options such as UCLA Extension and UC Irvine cost around $8,600 to $9,900.
Is an online paralegal certificate respected?
Yes, if it comes from a recognised school and teaches practical skills. Several ABA-approved programs, including UCLA Extension and UC Irvine, now teach online with live classes. Employers look at the institution, the curriculum and your skills more than the delivery format.
Do I need an ABA-approved certificate?
Only in some situations. It is the simplest way to meet California’s paralegal rules and NALS’s Professional Paralegal eligibility. Elsewhere, many employers accept non-ABA certificates from respected schools.
Can I get a paralegal certificate without a degree?
Yes. Community college and undergraduate certificates accept students without a bachelor’s degree. Post-baccalaureate programs such as UCLA Extension’s graduate-level certificate require one.
Bottom line
For most degree holders, a well-regarded certificate is the quickest way into paralegal work. Choose ABA approval if you will work in California or want the NALS PP route. Otherwise, compare total cost, practical training and outcomes. Before you enrol, read what a paralegal does to make sure the job fits.

Is your firm the one being cited, or the one being skipped?
We ran the test. On several everyday legal questions, software companies are answering and law firms are not. We help firms fix that, and we build the technology behind the practice.
