Why I Wrote a Thriller About a Lawyer Who Kills a Judge

The Lawyer Who Killed the Judge by Anuj Kumar, a psychological courtroom thriller, out now on Amazon

For fourteen years I have written about courts. Judgments, appointments, the deals that move through law firms, the lawyers who win and the ones who quietly disappear from the cause list. Through Legal Desire, I have read more transcripts and orders than I can count.

And somewhere in all that reading, one question kept coming back to me. What happens when the most disciplined person in the courtroom is also the most dangerous?

That question became my novel, The Lawyer Who Killed the Judge, a psychological courtroom thriller now available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.

A thriller where the judge is the target

Most legal thrillers ask who committed the crime. This one asks something more uncomfortable: what if the defence lawyer did not come to win the case at all?

Daniel “Danny” Reyes is a feared trial lawyer. Cold, brilliant, and very good at his job. Twenty years ago, Judge Aaron Vance sent Danny’s father into the system, and his father never came out. Now Vance is presiding over Danny’s newest case, the defence of a frightened young man accused of murder. Danny did not land that assignment by chance. He engineered it.

The book opens with Danny talking straight to you:

“People think a courtroom is a place where the truth comes out. I have spent twenty years in them, and I can tell you that is the first lie the building tells you.”

From there, the trial itself becomes the weapon. Every objection, every polite exchange at the bench carries a second meaning that only two people in the room can hear.

Why a legal journalist wrote fiction

Reporting teaches you to stay on the record. You verify, you attribute, you leave out what you cannot prove. Fiction let me go to the places reporting cannot: inside the head of a lawyer at three in the morning, and into the silence between a lawyer and a judge who both know more than they say.

But I wanted the courtroom itself to feel real. The rhythm of a calendar call. The way a jury reads a defendant before a word of evidence. How much power sits with whoever controls the story. Those details come from years of watching how courts actually work, and I think readers who know the law will recognise them.

The book is short, about 140 pages in paperback, and it is built to be read in one or two sittings. It is told by a narrator who promises you the truth, just not all of it. I will not say more than that. The ending is the part I am proudest of, and I would rather you get there yourself.

What readers are saying

The book holds a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon.com so far. One of the reviews is from a reader who bought it, so it carries Amazon’s Verified Purchase badge:

★★★★★ “Very Engaging Read”
“I was torn between wanting to make the reading last and hurrying…”
Delores C., Verified Purchase (Kindle), reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2026

She also wrote that it read like a full novel rather than a short story, which, for a book this length, was exactly what I was hoping to hear. You can read her full review on Amazon.
