The facts
The victim, a young woman, was found dead in her home with 19 injuries on her body, including three broken ribs, in a prosecution under Sections 376 and 302 IPC.
The trial court had acquitted the accused, holding that although some circumstances favoured the prosecution, the DNA report relied upon to connect the accused to the crime had not been proved beyond reasonable doubt.
The High Court, relying instead on the circumstantial evidence as a whole, convicted the accused under Sections 302 and 376 and imposed the death sentence.
On appeal, the Supreme Court held that the circumstances formed a chain so complete that there was no escape from the conclusion of the accused’s guilt.
Status: conviction upheld through final appeal.
Why this belongs in the Forensic Docket: A landmark example of a conviction being secured despite the DNA evidence itself being found unproved at trial: a complete chain of circumstantial evidence can carry a case even when a headline forensic test does not hold up, though it equally underscores why DNA analysis must be conducted and documented to a standard that can withstand scrutiny in the first place.
