Short answer: Jose Baez is a Miami-based criminal defence lawyer, born in 1970, best known for winning acquittals for Casey Anthony (2011) and Aaron Hernandez (2017). His net worth has never been disclosed. Celebrity-wealth sites put it at around $8 million, but that is an estimate, not a verified figure. He runs The Baez Law Firm and has also represented Harvey Weinstein and Charlie Javice.
Key takeaways
- Baez left school without finishing, earned a GED, served in the US Navy from 1986 to 1989, then studied at Florida State University and St. Thomas University School of Law (JD, 1997).
- His breakthrough was the 2011 Casey Anthony trial, where a Florida jury acquitted Anthony of murdering her daughter Caylee.
- In 2017 he won Aaron Hernandez’s acquittal in a Boston double murder case, then sued the NFL on behalf of Hernandez’s daughter after a CTE diagnosis.
- Not every case has been a win: Charlie Javice was convicted in 2025 of defrauding JPMorgan, and Harvey Weinstein was convicted after Baez left his team.
- The commonly quoted $8 million net worth is a media estimate. Baez has never published his earnings.
Who is Jose Baez?
Jose Baez was born on 17 September 1970 in New York to Puerto Rican parents and grew up partly in Florida. He did not finish high school, earned a GED and joined the US Navy, where he trained as an intelligence analyst. After his service he went to Miami-Dade Community College and Florida State University, then earned his law degree from St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami in 1997.
He built a criminal defence practice in Florida and later opened offices in other cities. Today The Baez Law Firm handles serious criminal cases, white-collar matters and civil rights claims. He is also a founding member of Investigating Innocence, a group that works on wrongful convictions, and co-wrote the New York Times best-seller Presumed Guilty (2012) about the Anthony case.
What are Jose Baez’s most famous cases?
Casey Anthony (2011)
Casey Anthony was charged with murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, in Orlando. The case dominated cable news and social media. After a six-week trial in 2011, the jury acquitted Anthony of murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter, convicting her only of misdemeanour counts of lying to police. Baez, then a relatively unknown lawyer, became a household name. Time called it “the social media trial of the century”.
Aaron Hernandez (2017)
Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, already serving a life sentence for a separate murder, was tried in Boston for a 2012 double homicide. On 14 April 2017 the jury acquitted him. Hernandez died by suicide days later. In September 2017 Baez announced that Hernandez’s brain showed severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and filed a federal lawsuit against the NFL and the Patriots on behalf of Hernandez’s daughter.
William Husel (2022)
Ohio doctor William Husel was charged with 14 counts of murder over fentanyl doses given to dying patients. Baez’s team argued the doses were comfort care, and the jury found Husel not guilty on all counts in 2022.
Harvey Weinstein (2019)
Baez joined Weinstein’s defence in early 2019 and withdrew later that year. Weinstein was later convicted in New York. Baez has since criticised decisions made by the rest of the team.
Charlie Javice (2025)
Baez represented Charlie Javice, founder of the student-aid start-up Frank, who was accused of inventing millions of customers to sell the company to JPMorgan Chase for $175 million. After a five-week trial in 2025, the jury convicted her. It was one of Baez’s highest-profile losses.
Derek Rosa (2025)
Baez’s firm took on the defence of Derek Rosa, a Hialeah teenager charged with first-degree murder over the death of his mother in 2023. In November 2025 NBC6 reported that Baez personally stepped back from the case, while colleagues at his firm stayed on as counsel of record. Baez said publicly that “no one is abandoning Derek” and that his firm had spent seven figures on the defence.
What is Jose Baez’s net worth?
The figure you will see most often is about $8 million, and Legal Desire’s own richest lawyers ranking uses that estimate. It is worth being clear about what that number is: an estimate repeated across celebrity-wealth websites, not a disclosed or audited figure. Baez has never published his income, and no major financial publication has valued his assets.
What we can say is that his earnings come from three main sources: fees from private criminal defence work, where high-profile murder and fraud trials can generate large fees; book and media income from Presumed Guilty and frequent TV appearances; and the wider business of his law firm. How much of that turns into personal wealth is not public.
How much does Jose Baez charge?
Baez does not publish a fee schedule. Top US criminal defence lawyers usually charge a flat fee or retainer for a whole case rather than an hourly rate, and fees for a full murder or federal fraud trial can run well into six or seven figures once experts and investigators are included. In the Rosa case Baez said his firm had spent seven figures on the defence. Anyone considering hiring him would need to ask the firm directly.
