The facts

The appellant was left in charge of an elderly woman while her son travelled on pilgrimage.

On his return, she had been murdered and her jewellery was missing.

A police sniffer dog tracked a scent to the appellant’s house; he was later arrested and some of the missing ornaments recovered from him, which her sons identified in the presence of her daughter.

Convicted under Section 302/34 IPC; the Supreme Court upheld the conviction, holding that although the sniffer-dog evidence alone was too fragile to rely on, the cumulative weight of the independent circumstances was sufficient.

Status: conviction upheld through final appeal.
