Baker McKenzie has advised Valmet on its agreement to acquire Tieto’s Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) business, including the AI-powered TIPS MES for production planning and execution. The transaction also covers the order-to-cash solution for the pulp, paper and fiber industry. This marks the firm’s first mandate for Valmet. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions.
With the acquisition, Valmet expands the offering of its Automation Solutions business area and strengthens its position in pulp and paper automation. The solutions are designed to help customers optimize production processes and accelerate the transition to autonomous operations.
“The acquisition of the MES business completes Valmet’s Automation Solutions offering for the pulp and paper industry. We are pleased to have advised Valmet on a transaction for the first time and to support the company’s planned expansion of its automation business,” says Dr. Jakub Lorys, Partner at Baker McKenzie and lead advisor on the transaction.
TIPS MES is a market leader in Europe and is installed at around 300 pulp and paper production sites worldwide. The business to be acquired generates annual sales of around EUR 32 million. Following completion, the business will become part of Valmet’s Process Performance Solutions segment.
