An expatriate resident holding a valid UAE residence permit can sponsor a spouse, children and in some cases parents, subject to income, accommodation and documentation conditions set by the federal authority and applied by the residency authority of the emirate concerned. The conditions are administrative rather than statutory in their detail, which is why they change without much notice and why Dubai and the other emirates do not always apply them identically.
The framework sits in the federal legislation on entry and residence of foreigners and the Cabinet decisions made under it. Day to day, applications are handled by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security or, in Dubai, by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs.
Who can sponsor a family member in the UAE?
A resident with a valid residence permit can sponsor family members. The federal portal states an income condition of a minimum salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation provided by the employer. It also records that the professional category of the sponsor is no longer a condition, which is a meaningful change from the older regime under which only certain job titles could sponsor.
Two qualifications matter. First, the portal itself notes that the conditions are subject to change and directs applicants to the residency authority. Second, individual emirates and individual categories apply their own thresholds in practice, and the figure applied to sponsoring a parent is not the figure applied to sponsoring a spouse. Treat the published federal minimum as a floor to check, not as the answer.
Women can sponsor family members. Historically this was restricted by profession, and that restriction has gone, although a mother sponsoring children in her own right can still involve a case by case approval.
What is the difference between employment and family sponsorship?
They are different relationships with different consequences, and confusing them is the root of several common problems.
- Employment sponsorship ties residence to a job. The employer holds the work permit, the residence permit follows it, and the permit is at risk when the employment ends. The employer carries obligations under the labour law, including on end of service entitlements.
- Family sponsorship ties residence to a family relationship. The individual sponsor, not a company, is responsible. The dependant’s permit derives from the sponsor’s permit and cannot outlive it.
The practical consequence is that a dependant’s status is only as secure as the sponsor’s. If the sponsor loses their job, the dependants’ permits are exposed at the same moment, not at their own expiry date.
A dependant who wants to work generally needs a work permit in their own right. Being sponsored by a spouse does not confer a right to work, and the permit is obtained from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation or the relevant free zone authority, with the employer named on it.
What conditions apply to sponsoring a spouse and children?
The core requirements are a valid sponsor permit, an attested marriage certificate for a spouse and attested birth certificates for children, suitable accommodation evidenced by a registered tenancy contract or title deed, medical fitness testing for those aged 18 and over, and Emirates ID enrolment.
There are two timing rules worth knowing. Where the family member enters on an entry permit, the sponsor has 60 days from entry to apply for the residence permit. And sons are generally sponsored as dependants only up to a specified age, with exceptions for students in full time education and for children with disabilities, while daughters can typically be sponsored while unmarried. The age limits and the exceptions have been adjusted more than once, so confirm the current rule.
Attestation is the usual bottleneck. Marriage and birth certificates issued abroad normally need legalisation in the issuing country and attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, plus a legal translation into Arabic. This cannot be compressed at the last minute.
Can you sponsor parents and other relatives?
Parents can be sponsored, but on a different basis. The federal portal records that a residence visa for parents is granted on a yearly basis regardless of how long the sponsor’s own permit runs, which means annual renewal and annual cost rather than a permit aligned to the sponsor.
Parent sponsorship also tends to attract a higher income threshold than spouse and child sponsorship, and it usually requires evidence that the parents are dependent on the sponsor and that there is no one in the home country to support them. Both parents are normally sponsored together rather than one alone, unless there is a reason such as the death of the other parent.
Beyond spouse, children and parents, sponsorship of other relatives is exceptional and handled case by case. Domestic workers are a separate regime, governed by the federal domestic workers legislation, with its own contract, welfare and recruitment requirements.
What obligations does a sponsor take on?
More than most sponsors realise. In substance, the sponsor undertakes to the authorities that they are responsible for the dependant’s presence in the country. That carries with it:
- Maintaining valid status for the dependant, including renewals and Emirates ID.
- Providing accommodation and maintenance.
- Ensuring the dependant holds valid health insurance, which is mandatory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and is checked at renewal.
- Cancelling the dependant’s permit properly when the relationship or the residence ends, rather than letting it lapse.
- Meeting the cost of departure in certain circumstances.
Failure to cancel a permit correctly is the most common trap. An expired or improperly cancelled permit can generate accumulating consequences for the dependant and complications for the sponsor on their next application. Fines for overstay and late cancellation are set by the residency authority and are revised periodically, so check the current schedule rather than relying on a figure you have been quoted.
What happens if the sponsor’s own visa ends?
The dependants’ permits are affected immediately in principle, because they derive from the sponsor’s status. In practice there is normally a grace period after cancellation of the sponsor’s residence during which the family can either leave or transfer to a new sponsor. The length of that period depends on the circumstances and on current policy.
The same logic applies on divorce and on the death of a sponsor. A dependant spouse whose sponsorship ends will usually need to find an alternative basis, whether that is their own employment permit, a family member, or one of the self sponsorship routes.
Planning ahead is the point. If a sponsor knows their employment is ending, the family’s position should be dealt with at the same time as the sponsor’s own, not afterwards.
Where do sponsors get caught out?
Three things. First, relying on a figure for the income threshold quoted by an agent or an older article, when the applicable threshold depends on the emirate, the category and the current policy. Ask the residency authority.
Second, document attestation, which people consistently underestimate. Begin legalisation and attestation before you begin anything else.
Third, assuming that sponsorship confers a right to work. It does not, and a dependant who starts working without the appropriate permit creates a problem for the employer as well as for themselves.
Before you file, confirm three things with the authority for your emirate: the income and accommodation condition that applies to your category, the current age limits for sponsoring children, and the documents that will need attestation. Those three answers determine the timeline.

Frequently asked questions
Can a wife sponsor her husband in the UAE?
Yes. Sponsorship is no longer limited by the sponsor’s profession or gender, so a woman holding a valid residence permit can sponsor a husband and children provided the income, accommodation and documentation conditions are met. Some categories still involve case by case approval, so check with the residency authority for your emirate before making commitments.
Does a sponsored spouse need a separate permit to work?
Yes. A family residence permit gives the right to live in the UAE, not the right to work. A dependant taking a job needs a work permit obtained through the employer from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation or the relevant free zone authority. Working without one exposes both the employee and the employer.
Until what age can a son be sponsored as a dependant?
There is an age limit for sons, with exceptions for those in full time education and for children with disabilities, while unmarried daughters can generally be sponsored without the same cut off. The limits and the exceptions have been revised more than once, so confirm the current rule with ICP or the emirate residency authority rather than relying on an older summary.
What happens to dependants if the sponsor loses their job?
The dependants’ permits derive from the sponsor’s status and are exposed as soon as the sponsor’s residence is cancelled. There is normally a grace period in which the family either leaves or moves to a new sponsor, but its length depends on the circumstances and on current policy. Deal with the family’s position at the same time as the sponsor’s.
