NALSAR-CDFD Partnership to Enhance DNA Forensics in India.

NALSAR University of Law has signed a three-year collaborative agreement with the Centre of DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), a significant development in the field of forensic science and the criminal justice system. The agreement, which was signed in early April 2026, is expected to close the long-term gap between the scientific innovations in the field of DNA forensics and the efficient application of these innovations to the legal framework.

This cooperation is especially crucial at the moment when DNA evidence is becoming more and more the focus of criminal investigations and court trials. Nonetheless, scholars have repeatedly pointed out that even with technological changes in the laboratories, the gap in the understanding of such scientific evidence and its application in the courtrooms still exists.

The project will be aimed at dealing with some of the major issues that impact forensic reliability in India. These are the absence of proven laboratory procedures, strong quality control, and inadequate constant training of forensic scientists. Also, one of the serious issues found is that the legal practitioners (lawyers and judges) are not well acquainted with scientific evidence, especially DNA profiling.

The experts working on the project claim that the alliance will encourage research-based forensic practice and that only scientifically valid and reliable techniques are applied in criminal investigations. Both the forensic scientists and the legal professionals will be trained and taken through interdisciplinary workshops to increase their capacity to handle these cases. This will assist the courts in a better evaluation of the DNA evidence to enhance its admissibility and the likelihood of misinterpretation.

The collaboration also indicates a larger perspective of creating a next-generation forensic ecosystem in India. The program will combine legal studies with leading scientific research to create professionals who will be knowledgeable in both fields. This will enhance the general integrity of forensic evidence and lead to improved and more just court decisions.

All in all, the NALSARCDFD partnership is an important milestone in enhancing the performance, dependability and use of DNA forensics in the justice system, and the need to have interdisciplinary methods in the contemporary investigation of crimes.
