Short answer: John Morgan, founder of the personal injury firm Morgan & Morgan, has an estimated net worth of at least $1.5 billion according to Forbes, which added him to its 2025 Billionaires List as a self-made billionaire. That makes him the richest practising lawyer we can verify. Most of his wealth comes from the firm, which reported more than $2 billion in revenue in 2023, plus investments in real estate and attractions.

Who is John Morgan?
John Morgan is an American trial lawyer and businessman based in Orlando, Florida. He opened his practice in 1988 with partners Stewart Colling and Ron Gilbert, focusing on personal injury and medical malpractice cases. He started advertising on TV and radio in 1989, years before most firms thought that was respectable, and in 2005 he bought out his partners and renamed the firm Morgan & Morgan.
The firm grew fast. It had around 420 employees in the early 2000s and 260 lawyers by 2013. Today it lists more than 1,000 lawyers and over 6,000 staff across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. In 2024 Law360 ranked it among the 50 largest US firms by headcount.
How did John Morgan become a billionaire?
Contingency fees at enormous scale
Personal injury lawyers in the US usually work on contingency. They take no fee upfront and instead keep a share of any settlement or verdict, often around a third. Morgan & Morgan applies that model at a scale no other firm matches. In 2018 alone the firm reportedly took over two million calls, signed about 500 new cases a day and collected around $1.5 billion in settlements for clients. By 2023 its revenue was reported at more than $2 billion.
Advertising as a growth engine
The firm’s advertising budget is reported at about $350 million a year across TV, billboards and digital. Forbes described Morgan in 2024 as the lawyer behind $350 million a year in ads. The spending keeps a steady flow of new clients coming in, which is what a volume contingency business needs.
Technology
In September 2026 the firm said it would invest at least $1 billion in AI and technology over ten years, including $300 million on its in-house case platform.
Investments outside the law
Morgan has diversified into real estate and entertainment. His holdings include six WonderWorks science attractions, reported to bring in about $33 million a year, the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Tennessee, and a stake in Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville brand.
How does John Morgan compare with other rich lawyers?
Most “richest lawyer” rankings are built on estimates. Morgan’s figure is different because it comes from Forbes’ billionaires methodology. The late Texas trial lawyer Joe Jamail, who died in 2015, was estimated at about $1.7 billion, built the same way: contingency fees from huge personal injury and commercial verdicts. What is John Morgan known for outside the courtroom?
Morgan is one of Florida’s most active political donors and campaigners. He started the push for medical marijuana in 2013, and his firm spent more than $15 million on the campaign that led to Amendment 2 passing in 2016. He gave $1 million to the 2020 ballot measure that raised Florida’s minimum wage in yearly steps, reaching $15 an hour in September 2026. Voters approved it in November 2020. He has donated to Democratic campaigns and has floated launching a new political party.
The firm has also faced criticism. In 2026 a Georgia arbitrator awarded a former client $4.3 million over a settlement made without his consent, and the firm’s heavy advertising has drawn complaints from rivals about its effect on local legal markets.
