Hogan Lovells advises Aireon in landmark acquisition by Iridium Communications Inc.

Washington, D.C. – Global law firm Hogan Lovells has advised Aireon – operator of the world’s only space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) air traffic surveillance system, on its landmark acquisition by Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM), a leading provider of global voice, data, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) satellite services.

The acquisition brings together Aireon’s surveillance and data services—including GPS jamming and spoofing detection—with Iridium’s global satellite communications network and PNT capabilities, which help maintain the reliability of GPS-dependent systems in contested environments. Together, the combined platform delivers four critical capabilities to the aviation sector: comprehensive aircraft tracking, real-time pilot communications, assured navigation and timing integrity, and advanced data analytics that enhance airspace safety and operational efficiency.

“This transaction highlights the strength of our premier space and satellite practice and reinforces our ability to deliver fully integrated advice on complex, high-stakes transactions,” said partner Steven Kaufman. “Our team played a central role in driving the process and negotiating with both Iridium and the various strategic owners of Aireon and their counsel, helping bring all parties to a successful outcome.”

The Hogan Lovells deal team was led by partners Steven Kaufman, Joseph Gilligan, Gabrielle Witt (all M&A, Washington, D.C.), senior associate Spenser Karr (M&A, Philadelphia), associates Antione Hudson and Molly Mueller (both M&A, Washington, D.C.), and Hanna Petro (General Corporate & Finance, Northern Virginia).
