Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer) has hired Marie Manley, as a partner and Head of Life Sciences Regulatory, in London.
Marie is a leading figure in the UK and European pharmaceutical regulatory market, ranked in Band 1 in Chambers for Life Sciences Regulatory and included in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame for Life Sciences and Healthcare. She advises development-stage, speciality and established global life sciences companies in a broad spectrum of matters, both contentious and non-contentious, across the life cycle of pharmaceutical and biotech products and medical devices.
Her practice encompasses advice on regulatory exclusivity and incentives, optimisation of regulatory and IP rights, market access strategy (including representation before the NICE Appeal Panel and before the English courts), product liability, marketing and advertising, pricing and reimbursement, digital health and AI technologies, transactional regulatory support, and anti-trust with a focus on the intersection of competition law with IP regulatory rights, and parallel trade. A significant amount of Marie’s work is contentious in nature, including litigation and judicial review before national and European courts and healthcare regulatory bodies.
Marie studied law in Switzerland, completed an LLM in International Law at Lausanne University and an LLM at Columbia University in New York, and completed postgraduate studies in EU competition law at King’s College London. Through her studies and subsequent career, she has an international background, multilingual capability and extensive experience in advising companies operating across the UK and EU.
Marie’s arrival will strengthen the firm’s market-leading pharmaceutical regulatory capability spanning both advisory and contentious work.
Alan Montgomery, corporate partner and Head of Life Sciences at HSF Kramer, said: “Marie is a leading light in life sciences regulation in the UK and Europe, and her profile, practice, existing relationships and cultural perspective are strongly aligned with our platform and our commitment to reinforcing our life sciences capabilities in Europe and beyond. Her arrival will transform our offering to clients in the sector.”
Chris Parker, disputes partner and Head of Life Sciences at HSF Kramer, said: “Marie adds a further dimension to our life sciences offering, bringing unrivalled regulatory insight to support our existing team. It’s fantastic to have her on board.”
Laura Orlando, EMEA Head of Life Sciences, said: “We are excited to welcome Marie to our team and to make the most of the significant synergies between Marie’s practice, which spans the UK and Europe, and the strengths and capabilities we have in place in the region, to the benefit of our clients.”
Marie Manley commented: “It is exciting to be joining a firm in which the life sciences sector is a clear priority, underpinned by such a strong collaborative platform. Businesses in the life sciences sector are grappling with an increasingly complex regulatory environment, and they need multidisciplinary support throughout the life cycle of their innovative products and across key markets. As a global full-service law firm, with a well-established and talented multidisciplinary team, with offices in all key European markets, HSF Kramer is well-positioned to support them. I very much look forward to these opportunities to collaborate with my new colleagues globally.”
Marie is the latest arrival to support clients in the life sciences sector, following the hire of IP litigator Philipp Cepl in Düsseldorf in April.
