Delhi’s New ₹152-Crore Regional Forensic Laboratory: Strengthening India’s Forensic Infrastructure

Haryana Forensics, Forensic Science Laboratory

Delhi is about to receive a boost to its investigation infrastructure when a ₹152‑crore state‑of‑the‑art Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) at Sheikh Sarai is approved. The facility will cover 6,300 metres of land and will have about 18,300 square metres of built‑up space. It is expected to be finished by 2028.

The proposed laboratory is important because forensic investigation plays a role in modern criminal investigations. Evidence such as DNA, fingerprints, questioned documents, drugs, toxic substances, firearms, digital devices and trace materials provides information that helps forensic investigators rebuild events and connect victims, suspects and crime scenes.

The new RFSL will strengthen Delhi’s capacity to examine evidence. It may cut delays caused by the growing workload on current facilities. Timely forensic examination is especially important in cases because delays in analysing evidence can affect investigations and court proceedings.

The investment also shows the growing recognition of science as a part of the criminal justice system. As crime becomes more sophisticated, forensic laboratories need equipment, specialised divisions and trained scientific personnel who can handle evidence.

From DNA profiling and forensic toxicology to examination and questioned‑document analysis, modern laboratories act as scientific bridges between crime scenes and courts. A stronger forensic infrastructure can therefore help make investigations faster and produce supported conclusions.

The upcoming Delhi RFSL is more than a government facility—it is an investment in the backbone of forensic investigation. If it is well equipped and staffed, it could boost capacity in the capital. Help create a more efficient evidence‑driven justice system.

Forensic relevance: infrastructure, DNA analysis, toxicology, digital forensics, trace evidence and criminal investigation.
