A corporate lawyer at a large U.S. law firm earns $235,000 in base salary as a first-year associate and $455,000 by year eight, on the scale top firms adopted in June 2026. In-house, senior and line counsel had a $220,000 median base in a 2026 Major, Lindsey & Africa report. Corporate partners at the 200 largest firms averaged $1.92 million.
“Corporate lawyer” covers two quite different jobs. One is the transactional lawyer at a firm who works on M&A, financings and capital markets deals. The other is the in-house lawyer who advises a single company. This guide compares pay across Big Law, in-house teams and smaller firms, using named and dated sources.
How much do corporate lawyers make in Big Law?
Big Law associates are paid on a lockstep scale by class year, regardless of practice group. Corporate associates earn the same base as litigators at the same firm. On 2 June 2026 Milbank raised its scale, and McDermott Will & Schulte matched within hours. More firms followed, including Quinn Emanuel and Katten.
| Associate year | Class year | Base salary (June 2026 scale) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st year | 2025 / 2026 | $235,000 |
| 2nd year | 2024 | $245,000 |
| 3rd year | 2023 | $270,000 |
| 4th year | 2022 | $320,000 |
| 5th year | 2021 | $385,000 |
| 6th year | 2020 | $410,000 |
| 7th year | 2019 | $440,000 |
| 8th year | 2018 | $455,000 |
These figures are base pay. Year-end bonuses are paid on top and vary by firm and by year. Not every large firm pays the full scale. NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey found a $215,000 median first-year salary at firms of more than 700 lawyers as of January 2025, when the top of the market was $225,000. Only 45% of offices at those firms reported the top figure.
Which firms do the corporate work?
If you want deal work, look at who actually advises on deals, not just firm size. DealDatabase.co keeps a searchable record of which law firms advised on more than 10,600 transactions, which helps you see which firms are active in M&A, private equity or capital markets in your target market.
How much do corporate partners make?
Corporate is the best-paid practice at partner level. Major, Lindsey & Africa’s 2024 Partner Compensation Survey asked 1,718 partners at the 200 largest U.S. firms about their 2023 pay. Corporate partners averaged $1.92 million, ahead of:
- Tax and ERISA: $1.66 million
- Litigation: $1.37 million
- Real estate: $1.32 million
- IP: $1.22 million
- Labor and employment: $930,000
The partner title covers a wide range. The same survey found equity partners averaged $1,937,000 and non-equity partners $558,000. At the very top of the market, the 2026 Am Law 100 reported average profits per equity partner of $3.59 million for 2025. Wachtell Lipton, a corporate and M&A powerhouse, led at about $12.15 million, and Kirkland & Ellis followed at about $11.12 million. How much do in-house corporate counsel make?
In-house lawyers trade lockstep scales for salary plus bonus, and often equity. The most useful recent data comes from Major, Lindsey & Africa’s 2026 In-House Counsel Compensation Report, based on 641 U.S. in-house placements the recruiter made in 2024 and 2025.
| In-house title | Median base salary | Median bonus | Median total cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior counsel / counsel | $220,000 | $44,000 | $271,000 |
| Associate / assistant general counsel | $277,000 | $80,000 | $363,000 |
| Deputy general counsel | $330,000 | $116,000 | $446,000 |
| General counsel / CLO, public company | $450,000 | $309,000 | $739,000 |
The middle half of senior counsel and counsel placements had base salaries between $200,000 and $250,000. For public company general counsel, the middle half ran from $375,000 to $574,000.
A second survey points the same way. BarkerGilmore’s 2025 In-House Counsel Compensation Report, released on 30 April 2025 with nearly 3,000 respondents, found in-house salaries rose 2.8% in 2025, down from 4.4% in 2024. Top-earning general counsel at public companies exceeded $4.5 million in total compensation.
What do chief legal officers at public companies make?
At the top, pay looks like other C-suite roles. The Conference Board and Major, Lindsey & Africa’s CLO Report: 2026 Edition, based on 2025 proxy disclosures, found a median total compensation of $4.2 million for chief legal officers at S&P 500 companies who were named executive officers. In the Russell 3000 the median was $2.1 million. Most of that comes from stock, not salary. Read our explainer on chief legal officer vs general counsel for how the two titles differ.
How much do corporate lawyers make at boutique and mid-size firms?
This is where public data gets thin. Smaller firms rarely publish salary scales, and good national surveys of mid-career pay at those firms are scarce. Here is what is reliably sourced:
- Small firms: NALP’s Class of 2024 data shows a $80,000 median starting salary at firms of 1 to 10 lawyers.
- All law firms: the median starting salary across law firm jobs was $160,000 for the Class of 2024.
- Smaller markets: outside the major cities in NALP’s January 2025 associate survey, first-year medians were $181,900 in the West, $170,000 in the Northeast and $160,000 in the South and Midwest.
Some elite boutiques pay the full Big Law scale. Litigation boutiques such as Susman Godfrey, Hueston Hennigan and Kellogg Hansen were among the firms reported as matching the June 2026 scale. For a corporate boutique, ask directly whether the firm pays “market,” because many do not.
How does corporate lawyer pay compare with the average lawyer?
The BLS median for all lawyers was $159,670 in May 2025, with the 75th percentile at $221,370 and the 90th at $351,600. A first-year corporate associate in Big Law already earns more than three-quarters of salaried lawyers. That said, BLS does not report corporate lawyers separately, so it cannot isolate their pay. Our lawyer salary guide breaks the national numbers down by state and city, and our guide to how much a lawyer makes covers each career stage.
What drives a corporate lawyer’s pay?
Four factors explain most of the difference between two corporate lawyers with the same years of experience:
- Platform. Big Law, in-house and small firms pay on very different models, as the tables above show.
- Location. NALP’s January 2025 survey found six cities with a $225,000 median first-year salary: Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco and the Washington, DC area. Across the 19 cities it analysed, medians ranged from $170,000 to $225,000.
- Business generation. For partners, Major, Lindsey & Africa found that originations alone explained 64% of the variation in pay, rising to 72% when combined with billing rates.
- Billing rates. Clio put the U.S. average lawyer hourly rate at $349 for 2025. Higher rates fund higher pay: the ABA Journal reported that a 36% increase in billing rates helped drive the rise in partner pay in the 2024 Major, Lindsey & Africa survey.
What about corporate lawyers in London?
London’s top corporate firms pay newly qualified (NQ) solicitors far more than the UK average. As of July 2026, the five Magic Circle firms paid London NQs a base of £150,000. Milbank’s London NQs earn $235,000, roughly £175,000 at the June 2026 conversion. Quinn Emanuel pays London NQs £189,000.
Frequently asked questions
Do corporate lawyers make more than litigators?
At associate level in Big Law, no: both are paid on the same lockstep scale. At partner level, yes on average. Major, Lindsey & Africa’s 2024 survey found corporate partners averaged $1.92 million and litigation partners $1.37 million.
Do in-house lawyers earn less than law firm lawyers?
Often at mid-level, but not always overall. Senior counsel and counsel had a $271,000 median total cash in Major, Lindsey & Africa’s 2026 report, below a Big Law midlevel associate’s base. Senior in-house leaders can out-earn many partners once bonuses and equity are included.
What is the starting salary for a corporate lawyer?
At large U.S. firms, $235,000 base on the June 2026 scale. Across all law firms, NALP found a $160,000 median starting salary for the Class of 2024, and $80,000 at firms of 1 to 10 lawyers.
How do you become a corporate lawyer?
In the U.S., you need a JD and bar admission, then usually a junior role in a firm’s corporate or transactional group. Many lawyers later move in-house. In England and Wales, you qualify as a solicitor through the SQE and two years of qualifying work experience.
Bottom line
Corporate law pays at the top of the profession, but the numbers depend on the platform. Big Law offers $235,000 to $455,000 in base pay for associates and the highest partner earnings. In-house roles pay less in base at mid-level but can match or beat firm pay at the senior end. Small firms pay much less to start.
