Global law firm Clifford Chance has advised Rock Rail and Aberdeen Investments on the project and financing aspects of a landmark transaction, supporting the delivery of the UK’s first major fleet of battery-electric bi-mode trains and associated rail infrastructure, which are to be operated by TransPennine Express.
The investment is strategically important for both the North of England and the wider UK rail industry, supporting faster, more frequent, more efficient and lower-carbon rail connectivity, while helping to drive economic growth, job creation and business investment.
The investment will support the delivery of 29 new five-car trains as part of the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade, one of the UK’s largest rail modernisation programmes, covering Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Leeds, Hull, York, Scarborough and Saltburn.
Clifford Chance’s team was led by partner Paul Carrington and senior associate Reiss Guiness, with support from senior associates Emma Durrell and Olga Korshun, and associates Rory O’Driscoll, Ope Oreyemi and Lauren McGowan.
