In a dramatic and troubling episode, Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar, a senior IPS officer, died by suicide at his Chandigarh residence on October 7th. The incident has plunged the police community into shock, with an eight-page suicide note and a one-page will recovered from the scene. Notably, the will and note were dated October 6 and October 7, respectively, both signed with the same green pen, prompting a forensic investigation into the timing, ink, and handwriting for possible inconsistencies.
The suicide note reportedly names several IPS and IAS officers, alleging harassment and deep internal conflict, indicating severe professional strain and systemic pressure. This revelation has rendered the internal dynamics and stress of high-ranking police officials a focal point for authorities and public scrutiny.
The investigation gained further complexity with the arrest of Head Constable Sushil Kumar—ADGP Kumar’s personal security officer—in a recent bribery FIR filed by liquor contractor Praveen Bansal, who claimed Kumar solicited a monthly bribe of ₹2.5 lakh. Interrogation reports reveal claims implicating the deceased ADGP, intensifying the scrutiny on corrupt practices within the department.
A significant point of contention remains the missing personal laptop of the officer. Only a laptop belonging to his daughter was found, while the whereabouts of the officer’s device is still unknown, raising suspicions about evidence tampering or concealment. The case further escalated during the site search, as police clashed with a visiting relative, an MLA from Punjab.
ADGP Kumar was recently transferred after a brief stint at Rohtak Range, highlighting a turbulent phase in his career. Despite the tragedy, colleagues remember him as a friendly officer. As the forensic examination continues, the police establishment—and the broader public—await clarity on the circumstances leading to this shocking loss.
