London — Mayer Brown today announced Daniel Vowden has joined the firm as a partner in its Antitrust & Competition practice in London where he will focus on advising international clients on the full spectrum of EU and UK competition law matters, including merger control, as well as foreign direct investment controls and cross-border deals requiring regulatory approval.
Daniel joins from Herbert Smith Freehills, where he was a partner. With over 20 years’ experience, including as an EEA-qualified lawyer, Daniel has spent most of his career in London and, more recently, Brussels, where he was formally admitted to the Brussels Bar (A-List). Daniel is a member of the Advisory Committee of the UK Law Society’s Competition Section, taking up the post on November 1, 2023.
“Daniel is a trusted adviser with demonstrated success in counselling clients on highly complex merger clearances as well as strategic and advocacy work.” said Britt Miller, co-head of the Firm’s global Antitrust & Competition practice. “His innate understanding of the EU’s approach to competition issues, makes him a great addition to our team, as we continue to build on our presence globally. Our international Antitrust & Competition practice is witnessing a marked uptick in demand for legal services as issues become more complex, regulatory scrutiny intensifies and the governing legislation in both the UK and Europe is reforming.”
In addition to Daniel’s transactional expertise advising large multinationals and sovereign wealth funds, Daniel has in-depth experience of behavioural and advisory matters, including EU and UK cartel investigations, with a particular focus on the pharmaceuticals, financial services, mining, TMT and retail sectors.
Dominic Griffiths, Mayer Brown’s London managing partner said: “We continue to focus on attracting high calibre lateral partners to the firm. Daniel has a strong reputation in advising clients on complex competition law issues and is perfectly positioned to support clients and existing teams served by London and our other European offices, as well as interface with our global transactional practices and wider dispute resolution practices.”
The Mayer Brown Antitrust & Competition practice has a strong presence in key financial centres across Europe and the US. In the last two years the firm has hired competition and antitrust partner Richard Snyder into its Washington DC practice, partner Airlie Goodman into its London practice and partners Dr. Andrea Pomana and Aymeric de Moncuit into its Brussels practice.
