Freshfields enhances global finance practice with new Frankfurt partner focusing on energy transition

Global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) has today announced that Andreas Ruthemeyer, a leading practitioner in energy transition and infrastructure finance, will join the firm’s global transactions practice as a partner in Frankfurt, Germany, on or before 1 January 2024.

Ruthemeyer brings broad industry experience advising financial institutions, financial sponsors and other companies on the development and financing of complex projects and structured lending transactions with a focus on the energy, infrastructure, transport, and natural resources sectors.

He re-joins Freshfields following a short spell at another leading law firm. Ruthemeyer began his Freshfields career in 2011, working closely with the firm’s extended banking and finance group on multiple, market-leading transactions. His cross-border experience will support the firm’s expertise in the energy transition space, covering international project finance, ECA-backed finance, sustainability-linked finance, acquisition finance and structured corporate finance transactions.

Freshfields Global Head of Transactions Julian Pritchard said: “The transition to renewable energy sources is top-of-mind for both the public and private sectors in Germany, the EU, the US and globally. Andreas brings valuable experience in all aspects of the energy transition, which will be highly relevant for many of our firm’s clients.”

Freshfields partner Wessel Heukamp said: “We’re seeing ambitious targets from governments to transition to a low-carbon economy, which means the energy, infrastructure and resources sectors are ripe for investment and growth for new projects. Andreas’ strong market profile – and established connections in these important sectors – will support our offering as this activity continues to ramp up. He will be an asset to the global firm, and a great cultural fit, having spent time at Freshfields before. We welcome him to the partnership.”

With significant transformation expected in the energy sector and other energy-dependent industries over the next 10 years, Freshfields is well-placed to support clients as they manage legacy assets and risk, and to the development of new projects, technologies and investment strategies.

Ruthemeyer’s appointment to the partnership as a leading practitioner in energy transition is in line with the firm’s continuing strategy to strengthen its global transaction practice, with Doug Bryden recently joining as a proven ESG expert.
