Reports say, two men on a motorcycle started following Mr Srivastava this morning when he was on his way to work. On the way, near Manmohan Park, the men shot at Mr Srivastava, who died on the spot.
Soonafter lawyers started protesting the death of their colleague. A large contingent of police force has been sent to the spot.
Ironically, the murder took place when the DGP OP Singh was reviewing the law and order situation with senior cops in Allahabad.
The shooting took place near Manmohan Park at around 10.30 am when Rajesh Kumar Srivastava was on his way to collectorate on his motor bike. Two unidentified assailants, who were chasing him, overtook him and shot him on his head with close range. The advocate died on the spot.
Incidentally, the convoy of the Chief Secretary and the DGP had passed through the busy Manmohan Park under Colonelganj Police Station minutes before the shooting took place. Agitated over murder of their colleague, lawyers boycotted judicial work and went on rampage blocking roads and indulging in violence.
They demanded immediate arrests of the assailants and adequate compensation to the family of the deceased. Heavy police force has been deployed at the court campus and district hospital where a large number of lawyers have gathered to check any fall out of the shooting.
The SSP Allahabad Akash Kulhary said that land dispute was stated to be reason behind the killing of the lawyer. “We have registered a case and investigations are underway to identify killers,” said the SSP. The police are also searching footage from CCTV cameras installed at Manmohan Park.
