What Insurance Is Available for Infertility Treatment

Infertility is a major problem that many families have to deal with, causing many families to have to abandon their dreams of starting a family. While there are some infertility treatments out there, some of them can be extremely expensive, and they aren’t all covered by insurance. When trying to get these treatments, you need to consider all sorts of factors, such as insurance coverage, availability of treatments, and fertility law. The whole process can be a hassle, but the end result of starting a family is well worth it. So what infertility treatments are covered by insurance, and how can they help treat infertility? Let’s take a look.

Infertility Testing

For most people, infertility testing is the extent of which their insurance pays for infertility treatment. Coverage for infertility treatment is relatively common, meaning that you’ll likely get infertility testing done and see what’s going wrong. However, it usually stops there, as most insurances do not push past diagnostic testing. Testing for infertility problems is relatively inexpensive compared to treatments, meaning that insurance companies don’t mind covering testing too much. Unfortunately, getting further treatment may end up being a hassle, as insurance companies don’t want to pay the high costs associated with it. That being said, you can still take advantage of your insurance’s diagnostic testing coverage, allowing you to get a better idea of what’s causing your infertility problems.

Medication

Once you’ve been tested and understand what is causing your infertility problems, it’s time to actually get treatment. One of the most common options of infertility treatment for both men and women is medication. Infertility medication can work in various ways, ranging from helping men get erect before sexual activity to helping women produce hormones that aid in conception. Infertility medication is usually much less covered than testing, and you might have a hard time getting it covered. However, if there is any form of infertility treatment covered by your insurance, then medication should be among them. Medication is usually cheaper and much less risky than other forms of infertility treatment, so it is one of the most likely treatments to be covered by your insurance.

Surgery

Another more risky option of addressing infertility is surgery. Surgery is usually a much more drastic option of dealing with infertility, and as a result, most insurances will not cover it. There are many things that surgery can do to help solve infertility, ranging from repairing damaged fallopian tubes in women to treating swollen veins and other reproductive problems in the male scrotum. Sometimes drastic options are needed to treat infertility issues, as medicine doesn’t always do the job. Unfortunately, insurance might not cover surgical procedures relating to infertility, causing you to pay out of pocket. However, if you manage to have insurance that covers your infertility surgery, it can save lots of money in medical costs.

Insemination

Common infertility treatment is to undergo artificial insemination. During this process, the sperm is placed as close as possible to the egg, hoping to get conception to occur. Insemination can be an effective treatment for infertility patients, but it is rarely covered by insurance. However, there are some state laws out there that require insurance policies to cover insemination. For example, Illinois has a state mandate that requires infertility treatments like insemination to be covered in group policy insurance. Insemination can be an effective treatment for infertility, but it is also expensive, meaning that insurance coverage can be a massive help in covering costs.
