U.S. Embassy Boosts Nepal’s Forensic Lab with Advanced Technology

Nepal’s criminal justice system received a significant boost this week as the U.S. Embassy handed over advanced forensic equipment and software to the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Kathmandu. Among the most important additions is the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a powerful tool used worldwide to match DNA profiles and forensic evidence, such as drug detection instruments, to solve cases that often remain unsolved for years.

U.S. Ambassador Dean R. Thompson, speaking at the handover ceremony, stated that the technology will enable the Nepal Police to solve cases more efficiently, particularly those involving missing persons, drug-related crimes, and violent offences. He emphasised that faster and more accurate DNA profiling can change the course of investigations, giving justice to victims and their families.

Inspector General of police (IGP) Deepak Thapa called the moment a turning point. For years, Nepal’s forensic labs have struggled with outdated systems and limited resources, as evident in high-profile cases like the Nirmala Panta case, where delays in DNA testing raised public concern.

The upgrade lab will now be able to process evidence at a global standard, reducing delays and strengthening the credibility of forensic results in court. Experts believe this collaboration not only modernises Nepal’s forensic capacity but also opens doors for regional cooperation and knowledge sharing.
