Damascus – July 18, 2025: The United States has brokered a ceasefire agreement aimed at halting a surge of violence in southern Syria, following intense Israeli airstrikes on the capital Damascus and growing unrest in the province of Sweida.

As confirmed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, the U.S. had engaged with multiple actors in the region and secured “specific steps” to end the conflict.

Most recent updates on Violence in Sweida

The latest unrest began over the weekend when clashes erupted between Druze militias and Sunni Bedouin groups in Sweida (a predominantly Druze province in southern Syria). As per monitoring groups, 100s have been killed in the violence, including civilians. The involvement of Syrian government forces further escalated tensions, with reports of destruction in several villages.

About Israeli Strikes in Damascus

On Tuesday night, Israeli fighter jets launched targeted strikes on military installations in Damascus, including the Defence Ministry and areas near the presidential palace. At least three people were killed and over 30 injured, according to Syrian state media. Israel has stated the attacks were intended to “protect the Druze community” and push back against Syrian troop movements toward Sweida.

Ceasefire and Withdrawal

Following both the strikes, U.S.-led diplomatic efforts resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the Syrian government and Druze factions. Under the terms of the deal, Syrian forces began a partial withdrawal from Sweida, though some military checkpoints reportedly remain in place. Local Druze religious leaders, including Sheikh Yousef Jarbou, are monitoring this ceasefire. However, divisions persist within the Druze leadership, with some leaders rejecting the agreement.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene an emergency session to address the ongoing crisis. International observers are watching closely to determine whether the ceasefire marks a lasting resolution or a temporary pause in Syria’s long-standing sectarian conflict.
