When it comes to choosing an attorney, most people don’t know if they should go with a fresh one or choose a more experienced one – depending on their issue, naturally.
This is because they think a fresh one may come with new ideas on how to win their case. However, at the same time, an experienced one surely knows all the ways through which their case can be won.
For example, a fresh criminal attorney may know more in terms of technology and similar topics than a veteran attorney. The latter may have a difficult time keeping up with more complex cases.
Still, we must all keep in mind that there will always be things that new attorneys don’t know – and those particular things make them unwanted and a disadvantage in most cases!
Ignoring Requests
Most new attorneys, when assigned to a case – by their partner or client – think that they can freely ignore requests, especially if they consider that they’re not helpful to the case.
That doesn’t apply – obviously. If a partner or client asks for medical or police reports, the new attorney must obey and do as they are told. If you’re a fresh attorney, keep in mind that many things that you consider unimportant can be extremely essential for other people – especially when it comes to partners/ clients.
Missing Deadlines
Attorneys are taught that, while studying, deadlines are crucial in their field of work. However, most of them don’t pay attention to this advice – which is more of a warning! Why?
Well, experienced attorneys know that, if they miss a single deadline, they will most likely never work with that partner or client ever again. This is because deadlines can make or break a deal/contract or save a person instead of putting them in prison. Even if it’s the smallest receipt that you have to bring to your partner, you have to do so on time!
Mistakes are Very Important
Mistakes are essential – as in, no attorney should ever think that one of their mistakes is irrelevant or forgivable. When they do something wrong, they’ll be punished – either in court, by their client, by their partner, or by their firm.
Naturally, fresh attorneys may think that simple mistakes will go unnoticed – but they don’t! Even a small typo can not only get you in trouble but may also affect your self-esteem in the long run – given that law firms are extremely competitive!
The Bottom Line
Besides all of the above, new attorneys also think that their main career goal is to become a partner at one of the biggest law firms in the world – and a corporate one, if possible.
Naturally, that’s a very bad start for any ambitious attorney, as they’ll have to work extremely hard until they can even help one of the big partners on a case. This is why, while they learn more and gather experience, it is highly recommended that they also keep an eye on the things that experienced attorneys do!
As they say, a person spends their entire life learning – be it from books or people. The same applies to fresh attorneys that should always take note of every new information they are presented with!
