“There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.”

–Will Rogers

Proving the above quote to be true in the literal sense, the monsoon session of Parliament witnessed instances of wits and humor while discussing various motions this year. The members of Parliament brought forth their witty side in forms poems and couplets to which there was thumping of benches.

Some of those instances are mentioned below:

 

POEMS

While discussing the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill on 19th July, 2018, a very famous poem was quoted by Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nishikanth Dubey. In an attempt to criticize the previous UPA government for rising of Non-Performing Assets of the banks, he said:

“Bura jo dekhne mai chala, bura na milya koye,

Jo dil khoje apna, mujhse bura na koye.”

 

A Motion of No Confidence in the Council of Ministers was moved by Shri Srinivas Kesineni on 20th July, 2018, where Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Ramvilas Paswan said:

“Humne bar bar kaha hai aur hum log iss desh me nara lagate the: Rastrapati ka beta, sabki siksha ho ek samaan.”

 

Shri Dushyant Chautala, representing Hisar Lok Sabha Constituency recited the following poem when a motion of No Confidence in the Council of Ministers was moved on 20th July, 2018:

“Rehne de aasman, zamin talaash kar,

Sab kuch yehi hai,

Kahi aur kuch na talaash kar.

Har aarzu puri ho toh jeene me kya maaza hai,

Jeene ke liye bas khubsurat wajah talaash kar.”

 

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Damodar Das Modi replied to the Motion of No Confidence in the Council of Ministers moved by Shri Srinivas Kesineni by reciting the following poem:

“Na majhi, na rehbar, na hak me hawayein,

Hai kasti bhi jarjar, Yeh kaisa safar hai?”

 

Shri Pravesh Sahib Singh, a member of Bharatiya Janata Party from West Delhi Lok Sabha Constituency, concluded his speech with a poem while discussing Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill on 24th July, 2018.

“Baitha hai jo hum par bharosa karke,

Uss garib ko uska hak hum kaise dila payenge,

Nhi jeete agar brashtachar ke khilaf iss ladaai ko,

Tab apne jamir se naazre kaise mila payenge?”

 

On 30th 2018, Dr. Manoj Rajoria, BJP candidate came up with the following poem while discussing Statutory Resolution regarding Disapproval of Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Ordinance and Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill:

“Milenge parindo ko manzil, yeh baate unke par bolte hai,

Rehte hai khud khamosh, lekin unke hunar bolte hai.”

 

While participating in the Discussion on Statutory Resolution regarding Disapproval of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Ordinance and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill on 31.07.2018, Dr. Kirit Somaiya while congratulating the Government recited the following poem:-

“Jo safar ki shuruwat karte hai, who manzil bhi pa lete hai,

Bas ek bar chalne ka hosla rakhna jaruri hai,

Kyunki acche insaano ka toh raste bhi intezaar karte hai.”

Before concluding, he drew the attention of Shri Mallikarjun Kharge by reciting the following poem:-

“Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehena,

Koi jabardasti gale milenge toh koi aankh marenge,

Hume toh apna kaam karte rehna hai.”

 

Shri Rodmal Nagar, from Rajgar Constituency concluded his speech with the following poem while participating in the Discussion on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Third Amendment) Bill on 2nd August, 2018:

“Rashtra shakti ke roop ko dekho, ab ho raha sabera hai,

Chalo jalaye deep waha, jaha abhi bhi andhera hai.”

 

While participating in the Discussion on Statutory Resolution regarding Disapproval of National Sports University Ordinance and National Sports University Bill on 3rd August, 2018, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur recited the following poem:-

“Na harna jaruri hai, na jitna jaruri hai,

Khel hai rastra nirman- vyaktiktwa nirman ka jariya,

Khel ko bas khelna jaruri hai.”

 

While debating on the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill on 6th August, 2018, Shri Prem Singh Chandumajra recited the following poem of Saint Guru Nanak Sahib:-

“Neecho andar neech jaat, Neechi hoon aath neech,

Nanak teen ke saang saath, wadhiyo ke kya rish”

He further went on to recite Guru Gobind Singh’s writing:-

“Jinki jaat aur kul nahi,

Sardarin hi pahi kadahi,

Teen hi ko sardar banayu,

Tave Govind Singh naam kahau.”

 

COUPLETS

While participating in the Discussion on the Motion of No Confidence in the Council of Ministers moved by Shri Srinivas Kesineni on 20th July,2018, Shri Tariq Anwar while began his speech with the following couplet:-

“Bohot shor shunte hai, peheloon me dil ka,

Jo chira toh ek kathra khoon bhi na nikla.”

 

While laying her speech on the Motion of No Confidence in the Council of Ministers moved by Shri Srinivas Kesineni on 20th July, 2018, Shrimati Meenakashi Lekhi quoted the following Urdu couplet:-

“Mujhe dekhne se pehle saanf kar, apni aankho ki puthliya galeeb,

Kahin dhak na de meri acchaiyon ko bhi naazro ki yeh ayeb teri.”

She further went on to quote Goswami Tulsi Das:-

“Jaako rahi bhavna jaisi, prabhu moorat teen dekhi taisi”

She further went on to recite the following couplet:-

“Kucch ajeeb sa rishta hai mere aur uske darmiyana,

Na nafrat ki wajah mil rahi hai, na mohabbat ka sila.”

In conclusion, she went on to quote the following couplet of Dag Daheli:-

“Aur honge tere mehfil se uthne wale,

Hazrat-e-daag jahan baith gaye.”
