The Stanford Daily, a student-run newspaper at Stanford University, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that it has violated free speech rights. The lawsuit challenges federal immigration policies that allegedly target noncitizen students engaged in political speech, particularly those expressing pro-Palestinian views. The suit focuses on two provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which permit the government to revoke visas and deport noncitizens whose political beliefs are deemed to conflict with U.S. foreign policy interests.
According to the complaint, these policies have created a chilling effect on campus speech, causing student journalists, especially international ones, to self-censor or remove coverage related to the conflict in Gaza out of fear of deportation. The Stanford Daily, along with two anonymous former international students, argues that the administration’s approach unlawfully punishes protected speech, thereby undermining First Amendment rights.
The case is part of growing legal challenges to what critics describe as an “ideological deportation” policy aimed at silencing dissent. The plaintiffs seek a court order to prevent the government from using these immigration powers to target students based on their political expression. The lawsuit highlights concerns about academic freedom and free speech protections for international students amidst heightened political tensions on U.S. campuses.
