Major Infrastructure Milestone Boosts Regional Connectivity. On 9 October 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure development. The new airport is designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing airports and improve regional connectivity for one of India’s busiest metropolitan areas.
The inauguration ceremony was part of Modi’s two-day visit to Mumbai, where he also launched several other infrastructure projects, including the city’s first fully underground metro corridor and ‘Mumbai One’ – India’s first integrated everyday mobility app. The underground metro represents a technological advancement for the city’s public transportation system, providing seamless connectivity across different areas of Mumbai.
Additionally, Modi met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his Mumbai visit to discuss strengthening bilateral ties following the recent UK-India free trade agreement. The timing of these infrastructure launches coincides with the festive season ahead of Diwali, demonstrating the government’s commitment to completing major projects that will benefit millions of residents in the Mumbai metropolitan region. The Navi Mumbai airport’s first phase is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve accessibility for both domestic and international travellers.
