Mayer Brown has advised Gemcorp Capital Management Limited (“Gemcorp”) on the establishment of, and the provision of funding to, Milele Energy Limited and its subsidiaries (“Milele Energy”). Milele Energy is a new clean energy platform that invests in clean-energy projects which deliver reliable, low-cost power to sub-Saharan Africa.
The investment provided by Gemcorp has facilitated Milele Energy’s acquisition of a significant stake in Africa’s largest wind farm, Kenya’s Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP). The Lake Turkana Wind Project has supplied about 20% of Kenya’s electricity since being completed in 2019. Gemcorp’s investment will also support Milele Energy’s execution of a 500MW+ pipeline of strategically important power infrastructure projects across Africa, spanning both renewable technologies and gas-for-baseload applications.
The cross-practice Mayer Brown deal team consisted of, among others, Banking & Finance partner Ashley McDermott, Private Equity partner Electra Callan, Energy & Infrastructure partner Kirsti Massie, Banking & Finance senior associate David Fraher and Private Equity associates Laura Baker, Alasdair Maher and Pia Hutchinson, assisted by Bowmans as to Kenyan law matters and Houthoff as to Dutch law matters.
