Life in a Law School

Life in a law school is a roller coaster ride full of beautiful experiences, moments and hard work. But I am sure when you graduate after 5 or 3 years it would be worth it. We all join law  school  confused  and  ecstatic  about  what  was  going  to  happen  to  us  in  these  coming years. We all dream to become Harvey Specter from Suits.  Most of us are in the perspective that life in a law school is full of sleepless nights and reading case laws and all.  That might sound a little platitude but it’s kind of true. But there is more to law school than just this. You will learn a lot of new life skills. Law school teaches you to be responsible.

THINGS IN A LAW SCHOOL

1.   CASES, SECTIONS, AND LIBRARY LIFE

Well from the very 1st  year you will notice that professors will teach you using bare acts and cases. In the beginning, it might be difficult for a 1st  year but gradually you get the hang of it. The 2nd  thing you will notice is that you have to read a lot. It would be advisable if you get into the habit of reading as fast as possible. Professors will tell you to refer books which are way thicker and bigger than your school books.   The third thing you will notice is that you have some kind of attraction towards the library. It becomes your second home and your third home if you are a hosteller. One thing is for sure is that you will be visiting that room quite often in the years ahead.

2.   MOOTING

Now  mooting  is  an  art  in  which  everyone  wishes  to  excel  in.  It  is  the  most  major extracurricular  activity  in  a  law  school.   A  lot  of  hard  work  and  commitment  is  required. Right  from  making  memorials,  to  making  the  arguments  and  practicing.  There  is  a  lot  of research  work  required  as  well.  Mooting  is  a  simulation  of  a  court  where  students  are presented with a court problem and they have to argue before a judge or a panel of judges. It is the closest experience a law student can have to appearing to court. You can always see a team in the library preparing for a moot. Mooting is challenging and demands long hours of hard work but they sure are fun.  It helps you think on your feet and give logical answers.

3.   DEBATES, YOUTH PARLIAMENTS, AND MUN’S

Debating is also an essential part of law school. It is more ideal for students who are in their

1st  year or 2nd  year as they don’t have much knowledge of law yet. Debating requires making logical points and attacking your opponent at the right time with the right power. There are a lot  of  debate  competitions  in  law  school  over  different  topics.  Every  law  school  has  a debating society which encourages you to become a strong and motivated speaker.

Youth Parliament  is a simulation of the parliamentary proceedings of our country in which students act as delegates and simulate different committees whereas MUN’s which is called as  Model  United  Nations  is  an  extracurricular  activity  in  which  students  role-play  as delegates to United Nations and simulate UN committees.

4.   RESEARCH PAPERS

Research paper also  is an important  part of law school. It  is the ultimate satisfaction when your research paper gets published  in a  law  journal. Every law school invites articles, case commentaries  and  book  reviews  for  publication  in  their  respective  law  journal.  There  are even  legal blogs which publish articles. It  takes a  lot  of research and patience  in writing  a research paper. It takes weeks to complete and edit your research paper. But it improves your research  skills.  Editing  footnotes  also  require  a  lot  of  hard  work  while  writing  a  research paper.

5.   EXAMS

Exams  are  one  thing  that  every  law  student  is  scared  of.  No  matter  how  many  exams  we write.  Exams  are  something  which  is  dreaded  by  every  law  student.  Every  law  student generally  has  8-  10  subjects  in  a  law  school that  means  there  8-10  exams  as  well.  In  the middle  and  end  of every  semester,  we have  exams.  Exams  are  the  time  when  you  see  the entire law school in the library and books get issued at a magnificent pace.   Caffeine during that time is an important part of your diet and late night snacks and ordering is common.

6.   ASSIGNMENTS

Along with the pressure of having 8-10 subjects we have to do assignments as well of these subjects. Each professor assigns you a topic on which you have to make an assignment on. It takes a lot of hard work and patience and  it’s a race against the due date. You are running behind professors to give more time and try to please them.

7.   INTERNSHIPS

Internships are also a major part of your law school curriculum. Now law schools can give you  theoretical  experience  but  not  practical  experience.  Well  actually  they  do  give  some practical experience but to get full practical experience students have to do internships which go on for a month generally. There are short period internships as well which are for 15 days. These  internships help  you to  apply the knowledge  you have  in reality. Generally 1st  years intern at an NGO or governmental ministries. They later intern with advocates and law firms. Internships are really exciting. It  makes you professional and gives you a gist of the office life. If it’s a stipend internship then you become really happy when you get that stipend at the end of your internship. It helps you get exposure and gain more skills. It helps you network with  co-interns  and  mentors.  It  also  helps  you  to  unlearn  the  myths.  With  the  growth  of technology,   there  are  online   internships  as  well  which  gives   law  students  a  brilliant opportunity.

8.   CONFERENCES, QUIZZES, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

There are  activities as well in  law  schools such as conferences where  you get  to  meet  and interact  with  famous  judges and  legal  luminaries.  There  are  quizzes as  well related  to  law such  quiz  on  contract  law  or  constitutional  law.  There  are  other  activities  as  well  such  as workshops, judgment writing competitions, essay competitions, seminars etc. which keep you occupied.

9.   SOCIETIES OR COMMITTEES

There are different clubs or committees in law schools as well such as the debating club, legal aid club, youth parliament club etc. which keep you occupied as well. It becomes more hectic for  you  when  you  become  an office  bearer  of the  club.  Being  in  any of these  help  you  to participate, organize competitions and events. It is a totally different experience and it helps you to gain more skills.

10. INTER-BATCH SPORTS

Inter-batch activities are something which everyone eagerly waits for. It’s the adrenaline and the hunger to prove that we are the best batch. Law school is not restricted to academics only. There are competitions between different departments of a university. The most common are football, cricket, basketball etc., But there are other sports as well such as kabaddi, tug of war etc.

11. FESTS

College fest is also an event which is eagerly awaited by the students. It is when everybody get together and work hard to put on a good show for the other students. But this is when you are hosting a college fest. When you visit some other college for a fest it is all about having fun and  being  yourself.  The  time  when  stress  is  thrown away and  everyone  can  relax and enjoy the moment. In college fests, different artists come and perform. Eateries are opened so that people can have mouth-watering food. Fests are definitely worth waiting for.

CONCLUSION

So yes life at a law school is sure very hectic and stressful especially when you have to go throw all this. But I can assure you when you graduate you will miss these days. Staying up late at night to finish memorials before the deadline, interacting with friends, participating in various other activities, waking up early in the morning to attend classes especially when you haven’t slept and managing your attendance (100% attendance is a myth in a law school). So this  is  your  typical  life  in  a  law  school.  Your  next  5  years  will  revolve  around  all  these activities. It is not compulsory that you have to participate in all these activities but yes these are the opportunities you get  in a law school. You will realize that you cannot be spoon fed anymore  and  you  have  to  make  a  name  for  yourself.  In  the  end  life  at  a  law  school  is  a beautiful experience full of joy, despair, and excitement.  It makes you a strong, independent person and I assure you that when you graduate you will be a totally different person and you will be ready to face the world. We all have our ups and downs but in the end, we all make to the finish line.
