A highly experienced contentious insolvency lawyer has joined Nelsons as part of an expert team of three.
Adrian Slater joined Nelsons’ Nottingham office as a partner on May 1st alongside senior associate Hayley Brown and associate Abbie Fotheringham, all relocating from Knights.
Having qualified in 1998, Adrian has spent the past 25 years advising on contentious insolvency matters, as well as commercial debt collection, supporting a range of clients, specialising in investigating the reasons behind company failures and pursuing claims with a view to swelling the assets for the benefit of the creditors.
He is also experienced in trust and property issues arising in the context of bankruptcy.
His career began at independent Nottingham firm, Eking Manning, where he progressed through the ranks in a two-partner insolvency team, gaining great experience of insolvency litigation domestically and cross-border, both in Europe and the US.
The firm was acquired in 2000 by Edwards Geldard, where Adrian began working with Hayley when she joined the team upon qualification in 2006, quickly developing an expertise in bankruptcy work. .
Adrian then moved to Fraser Brown in 2011, being reunited with Hayley in 2019 to aid in the development of an insolvency team. Following the acquisition by Knights in 2020, Abbie also joined the team upon qualification in April 2023.
Adrian said: “Having been in the Nottingham legal sector for more than two decades, I have experienced different sized firms and ways of working and have been aware of Nelsons exciting progress for some time. Having done some referral work with the firm previously and met various people through networking, I knew it would be a good fit. Stewart has great passion and a clear vision of what he wants to achieve in the next few years, and beyond, so we are excited to be part of that journey. Being able to join the firm with Hayley and Abbie was very important, and we are grateful for Nelsons’ support in making that happen.
“My ambitions are to enhance the insolvency offering within the firm, and I’m looking forward to collaborating with the current team members and seeing where that will take us. It would be great to one day achieve a full-service offering, from front-end restructuring cases through to dealing with the more contentious work. I want to ensure we can do all this successfully and build that reputation for Nelsons. For now, we are enjoying settling into our new office and meeting the wider team.”
Stewart Vandermark commented: “I am thrilled to welcome Adrian, Hayley and Abbie to Nelsons. The team are very well connected in the insolvency sector and bring with them a real depth of expertise and an excellent reputation. I have known Adrian and Hayley for around 20 years and it’s exciting to bring them to Nelsons to strengthen our offering.
“Their decision to move as a team to Nelsons as their first choice is testament to our fantastic reputation and highlights how our culture, growth and ambitious plans continue to make us an attractive destination. We look forward to the part they will play in driving the growth of our team and Nelsons.”
