From verification of military service to paperwork, there is a lot to do before a veteran can get to the treatment part. As a result, veterans feel discouraged to avail the facility and improve their lives.

Below, we have discussed how high-quality mental health care improves veterans’ lives and why it should be made easy to access. Read more!

Easy Veteran to Civilian Transition

According to Pew Research Study, almost 48% of veterans find getting in and out of the military equally difficult. Having followed the strict army lifestyle for years, it is challenging for veterans to adjust to a civilian’s way of life.

They must find a job, do the finances, establish a social network, and whatnot. Even the simplest house chores are hard to execute.

Besides lifestyle changes, several other important factors make veteran to civilian transitioning hard. These include:

  • Psychological trauma
  • Serious injuries
  • Loss of colleagues and friends

Since the majority of factors do associate with mental health, receiving high-quality treatment can help ease the transition.

Improved Relationships

The tough circumstances faced on the battlefield and harsh training make individuals in the military self-reliant. They do not share their feelings with others. And, when faced with challenges, they isolate themselves to resolve them.

It is why most veterans find it difficult to mingle with others. They feel agitated and restless all the time, which leads to arguments.

Veterans may also feel disconnected from their regular life. The constant comparison of the present to the past makes them unable to understand the family’s problems.

As a result, they cannot provide the level of care and love their family expects. All these factors strain the relationships.

High-quality health care in the form of relationship counseling can help veterans become more expressive. They can also learn to manage anger and let go of the traumatic past to live peacefully in the present.

Less Risk of Alcohol & Drug Addiction

Approximately 20 percent of the veterans with PTSD also suffer from drug or alcohol abuse. The need to cope up with the past makes them seek refuge in the intoxicating effects of drugs.

Drug and alcohol addiction further leads to low quality of life. Plus, they may develop serious health concerns like cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Besides rehabilitation programs, one-to-one counseling sessions and PTSD treatment can help reduce addiction. Veterans can lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Better Sleep Quality

Anxiety, chronic stress, emotional trauma, depression are some mental health issues that trigger insomnia in veterans. They have trouble falling asleep and give their bodies much-needed rest.

Consequently, lack of sleep intensifies mental health challenges. Insomniacs may also experience fatigue, low energy levels, and other physical issues.

Veterans can combat sleep disorders by effective mental health services, such as psychotherapy. Relaxation techniques and meditation can also improve sleep quality.

Final Thoughts

Summing it up, all military veterans must seek mental health care to resolve the complexities and lead happier lives. Responsible organizations must also cooperate and encourage veterans by making these facilities readily available.

You made a good point when you shared that high-quality health care in the form of relationship counseling can assure that veterans become more expressive. My friend just mentioned the other day that she is worried about her mother who is no longer healthy since she is very old now. I will suggest to her find the right hospice care for her so her mental health will be taken care of.
