Hogan Lovells is pleased to announce that it is deepening its leading Intellectual Property, Media and Technology (IPMT) practice with the hire of Gertjan Kuipers. He is joining as a patent litigation partner based in Amsterdam and starting with the firm on 3 April.
Gertjan is a highly respected practitioner with over 27 years of experience in patent litigation, and headed the patent practice De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, the largest independent law firm in the Netherlands, from where he joins.
Gertjan’s practice spans several different sectors, including technology and life sciences. He also has extensive experience in conducting and coordinating multi-jurisdictional litigation and advises on licensing, freedom to operate, IP strategy, and structuring contract research and joint R&D arrangements.
The news of his arrival closely follows the hires of leading IP & technology transactions partner Chris Natkanski to the firm’s Boston office, IP litigator Damon Lewis in Washington, D.C., and the promotion of 10 IPMT partners and counsel across the globe at the start of 2023.
Miriam Gundt, who recently became Global Managing Partner for the firm’s Intellectual Property, Media and Technology practice, said: “We are delighted to welcome Gertjan to our market-leading practice, which continues to grow in strategic markets. His appointment comes at an important time, as we prepare for the start of the Unified Patent Court, including its local division in the Netherlands, in June 2023. Gertjan’s expertise will be invaluable to our practice and will help us to further enhance our client offering.”
Amsterdam head of IPMT, partner Ruud van der Velden added: “We are very excited that Gertjan, one of the most experienced and reputed patent litigators in the Netherlands, joins our IPMT team in Amsterdam. His arrival will complement and enhance our offering, further cementing our market standing, and we look forward to working with Gertjan in representing our clients before courts in the Netherlands and the Unified Patent Court.”
Manon Cordewener, Managing Partner for the firm’s Amsterdam office, said: “I am extremely excited about the recent hire of Gertjan Kuipers, which comes on the heels of Tom van Duuren’s arrival to our office and continues our significant growth. Gertjan’s arrival is a significant addition to our patent practice in Amsterdam, which already has a strong reputation for handling complex and high-value IP litigation matters across a range of industries. We are thrilled to welcome Gertjan to our team and look forward to the contributions he will make in his new role.”
Gertjan Kuipers said: “I am excited to be joining Hogan Lovells and to be part of such a talented team, I look forward to working with my new colleagues to provide clients with the highest level of service and to contribute to the continued success of the firm’s market-leading intellectual property practice.”
