Led by Frankfurt partner Dr. Tobias Faber global law firm Hogan Lovells has advised Calisen, UK’s largest smart meter provider, on the launch of its first international operation in Germany.
The transaction involves a €100 million smart metering partnership with Energy Metering Germany (EMG), a competitive Meter Point Operator (MPO) established by Octopus Group.
The deal represents a major milestone in the roll out of smart meters, and follows the successful conclusion of a pilot scheme launched by Calisen and EMG in February 2025 under which approximately 10,000 smart meters have been installed to date. Also here, Calisen was comprehensively advised by Hogan Lovells.
Through a pioneering Meter Services Agreement (MSA) with EMG, Calisen is now positioned to deploy up to €100 million in smart metering assets nationwide. The MSA framework sets a new benchmark for collaboration between Meter Point Operators (MPOs) and Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) and is expected to serve as a blueprint for future partnerships as the German market continues to develop.
“This transaction represents an important step in the digitalization of Germany’s energy infrastructure and demonstrates the growing relevance of international collaboration in this field,” said Dr. Tobias Faber, Global Head of the Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects practice at Hogan Lovells in Frankfurt. “We are pleased to have supported longstanding client Calisen in establishing this innovative framework for smart metering investments in the German market.”
