Duration: 14th to 23rd September, 2016
Venue: Gujarat National Law University, Attalika Avenue, Knowledge Corridor, Koba, Gandhinagar
Concept Note:
Supremacy in airspace has played a determining role in deciding fate of the war waged on the ground. Therefore, effective air defense constitutes topmost priority for nations in modern world and India is no exception. Safety, security and liability of various stakeholders are paramount concerns of Air Law at the International as well as domestic level. Space age began with the launch of Sputnik-I in 1957 in the backdrop of cold war. With the lightening pace of scientific and technological advancement in space technology, select few States extended their supremacy in air to space as well.
Those who have not, aspire to do so in the near future. With the end of cold war, space activities are also exemplification of international cooperation. Rising human activities in space have posed unprecedented issues particularly relating to safety and security. Space law has addressed these issues through various International conventions and treaties. Besides, nations have developed their own policy regarding space to address the issues at domestic level.
With the recent success of Mangalyan, India has become fourth country in the world to enter Mars orbit – a feat achieved at relatively fractional cost and time. India has also established its name in global satellite launch and manufacturing industry. A sound understanding of intricacies of Air and Space law is highly desirable for various stakeholders involved in aviation and space activities in one form or the other but is also necessary for those charged with the responsibility of ensuring safety and security thereof.
