On May 19, 2023, Slovakia’s Specialized Criminal Court decided on one of the most high-profile trials in Slovak history, the murder of the investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová. Marián Kočner and Alena Zsuzsová were charged with ordering the murder. The Specialized Criminal Court found Alena Zsuzsová guilty of ordering the murder of Ján Kuciak and of prosecutors Maroš Žilinka and Petr Šufliarský, and sentenced her to 25 years in prison. Marián Kočner was cleared of ordering the murder for the second time. The case is currently on appeal.
Dentons’ Litigation and Dispute Resolution team is representing Ján Kuciak’s parents in this process on a pro bono basis. Partner Peter Kubina is leading the team with support from senior associate Ján Dulovič.
“I am grateful to the parents and siblings of Ján Kuciak for their trust and for allowing us to represent them in this process over the past four years. It is an honor for me to know them, although I would have preferred to meet them under different circumstances. I would also like to thank attorney Roman Kvasnica for his constructive and fair cooperation, which we will continue as we pursue this case in appeal,” commented Peter Kubina.
