Om 26th March’19, Chief Justice of India’s lists of cases showed over 750 cases were listed before his Bench with Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjeev Khanna.
Chief Justice explained the reason for listing so many cases before his Bench that the cases numbering from 12 to 751 were all defective. The cases were identified and brought to fore by the Supreme Court Registry. They have been lying in the court registry for almost nine years. Neither the litigants involved nor the lawyers who had signed on to represent them have bothered to cure the mistakes in the filing of these petitions. They remain a stack a file in registry room.
The CJI just wanted to clear this bulk of the backlog in the Supreme Court. CJI gave 2 Weeks time to litigant for clearing the defects or else these cases will be out from Supreme Court.
As of March. 2019, out of 57, 785 pending matters, 13,257 matters ( 12,757 Incomplete Miscellaneous matters and 500 Not Ready Regular Hearing matters) are such matters which cannot be listed for ‘hearing’ before Hon’ble Court.
