The Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral Research Associate to join the ERC-funded project, Crossroads of Knowledge in Early Modern England: the Place of Literature (based jointly at CRASSH and the Faculty of English), led by Dr Subha Mukherji (English, Cambridge). This five-year project (2014-2019) examines the thresholds between imaginative literary practice and more obviously epistemic domains of thought in early modern England. Research in years 1-3 addressed the intersections between Literature on the one hand, and Theology, Economics and Natural Philosophy on the other. The project is now in year 4, which is focused on Law and Literature/Arts, but findings from the other strands are also being incorporated into a widening interdisciplinary view. In addition, the team is working on an online exhibition, and developing computational skills and quantitative methods to test and expand the more traditional research conducted so far.

The successful applicant will hold a good first degree and a PhD in a relevant field of research, which must have been awarded by the start of the post. Research experience with early modern texts and/or archives is required; familiarity with current digital humanities research and technology is desirable; experience in researching, sourcing and managing digital images online is also highly desirable. An interest in either Law or Theology, or in widely interdisciplinary studies in the early modern context, would be particularly welcome. Applicants should be able to organise and participate in collaborative research initiatives and to present research findings to a scholarly audience. The successful applicant is expected to conduct the majority of their research in Cambridge, but must be willing to travel to libraries and archives where relevant to the project’s research/dissemination of research results.

Length of appointment: the position will be held for 15 months to start in January 2018 or as soon thereafter as possible, and to end no later than the project end-date of 30 September 2019.
