B.M.S. College of Law has a global vision and it has constantly undertaken measures to provide holistic and meaningful legal education to students. In course of such endeavours, the institution has observed that strong advocacy skills, ability to think logically and rationally, combined with acumen for drafting, are some key characteristics that are very necessary for a lawyer in the present scenario. Moot Courts are an essential part of Legal Curriculum, giving budding lawyers the opportunity to take part in simulated court proceedings involving drafting of memorials and presenting oral argument. Keeping in mind these benefits the College has successfully organized the “B.M. Sreenivasaiah Memorial 3rd National Moot Court Competition” held from 26th – 28th October, 2017.
The inaugural function was held on 26th October, 2017 at the college premises. The competition was formally declared open by Hon’ble Mrs. Justice B V Nagarathna, Judge, High Court of Karnataka. The Guests of Honour included Dr. Ragini Narayan, Donor Trustee & Member Secretarty, BMSET and Prof. Dr. M K Ramesh Professor, NLSIU. The program was presided by Sri. K Jairaj, IAS (Retd.), Former Additional Chief Secretary (GOK), Trustee, BMSET, Chairman, BMSCL, BMSSA, BMSIT. A total of 24 teams from all over the country participated in the competition.
The Competition was organized with four rounds i.e. Preliminary, Quarter Final, Semi Final and Final. Draw of lots and memorial exchange for the first preliminary round took place soon after the inaugural function.
The preliminary round and quarter finals were held on 27th October, 2017. Preliminary rounds happened in 12 court rooms in the campus. After the same, 8 teams were qualified for the quarter finals which also were held in afternoon session.
The semi-finals and finals were held on 28th October, 2017in the morning and afternoon sessions respectively.
Two teams that made it to the grand finals were 1. GLC College, Ernakulam & 2. KLE Law College, Bengaluru.
The final round was judged by Hon’ble Justice Arvind Kumar, Judge High Court of Karnataka, Prof. T.R. Subramanya, Former Vice Chancellor, KSLU & Research Fellow Centre for Regulatory Studies and Public Policy, WBNUJS and Prof. M K Ramesh, Professor, NLSIU.
The Valedictory function was held on 28th October, 2017 at 4.00 p.m. with Hon’ble Justice Arvind Kumar, Judge High Court of Karnataka as Chief Guest. Dr. Ragini Narayan, Donor Trustee & Member Secretary, BMSET, Prof. T.R. Subramanya, Former Vice Chancellor, KSLU & Research Fellow Centre for Regulatory Studies and Public Policy, WBNUJS and Prof. M K Ramesh, Professor, NLSIU graced the function with their esteemed presence. The program was presided by Dr. P. Dayananda Pai, Trustee, BMSET, Chairman, BMSCE.
Out of the 24 participants, KLE Law College, Bengaluru was declared winners and GLC College, Ernakulam was Runners up. Mr. Aditya Venugopal of Alliance School of Law, Bengaluru was declared Best Mooter Male, Ms. Chaitra Bhat of KLE Law College was declared Best Mooter Female. The Best Memorial was awarded to Alliance School of Law.
