Fire at Telangana Forensic Lab: Evidence Safety Assured, Investigation Underway

A major fire broke out on Saturday morning, 7 February 2026, at the Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory (TGFSL) in Nampally, Hyderabad, disrupting operations and prompting traffic diversions in surrounding areas as firefighters battled the blaze. The fire reportedly began around 10:08–10:20 AM on the first floor, where the computer forensics lab, training hall, library, and related facilities are housed, possibly due to an electrical short circuit in an MCB switchboard, according to preliminary official statements. The incident was brought under control by approximately 1:30 PM following a major response involving multiple fire tenders and even a firefighting robot, with no casualties reported. During the emergency, police directed traffic around the Nampally area and advised commuters to use alternative routes to ease congestion.

The blaze raised immediate concerns about the status of forensic evidence and sensitive materials stored within the lab. Given that TGFSL handles exhibits and digital data for various criminal investigations — including cyber forensic evidence and material linked to high-profile probes — rumours quickly spread on social media about the loss or destruction of key evidence. However, the Director of TGFSL, Shikha Goel, along with police officials, firmly denied these claims, clarifying that most case property and forensic materials remain intact and secure, having been previously submitted to courts or protected in storage. Officials stress that detailed assessments of equipment and data are still ongoing as part of the investigation.

From a forensic relevance standpoint, the incident underscores the critical importance of evidence preservation and proper backup protocols in forensic science infrastructure. Even minor damage to forensic databases, cyber evidence, or physical exhibits can complicate legal proceedings or delay justice. Authorities have lodged a formal complaint, registered a police case, and launched a full inquiry to determine the fire’s cause and evaluate potential damage to stored evidence. Meanwhile, forensic operations continue with unaffected sections of the lab expected to resume normal functions soon.
