Fox Corporation has filed a lawsuit in New York federal court against its former Mexican sports broadcasting partner, Media Deportes Mexico (MDM), alleging unauthorised use of the “Fox Sports” brand after the termination of their licensing agreement. According to the complaint, Fox claimed that MDM continued to operate under the name “Fox Sports Mexico” and used Fox trademarks, despite its right to do so having ended earlier in 2025 when Fox cancelled the arrangement due to unpaid licensing fees.
Fox is seeking a court order to block MDM from further use of its trademarks, as well as an injunction to prevent enforcement of a recent Mexican court ruling that Fox claims incorrectly granted MDM rights to the brand. The U.S. media giant also accused MDM of obtaining the Mexican ruling under pretences. He noted that Mexican authorities raided a Fox partner’s offices based on that order, further escalating tensions.
The dispute arises amid an increasingly competitive broadcasting landscape in Mexico, with Fox having recently acquired the sports-focused streaming service Caliente TV. Meanwhile, MDM lost the rights to use the Fox brand but is fighting back through its legal efforts in Mexico. Fox claims that MDM’s continued use of its marks constitutes trademark infringement and breach of contract, and is demanding damages and an explicit prohibition on the use of the name.
This legal dispute highlights the high stakes of international trademark rights, particularly when global streaming and branding strategies are in play.
