Holiday Drinking and Driving: How to Stay Safe

During the holiday season, alcohol consumption often spikes as people come together to celebrate. However, combining alcohol with driving is a dangerous and deadly mix. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that approximately 32 individuals lose their lives every day in the US due to drunk-driving incidents. Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents during the holidays. Keeping yourself educated about the laws and regulations surrounding it becomes vital.

The good news is that such tragedies can be prevented. Here’s why it’s so dangerous to drive under the influence of alcohol and what steps you can take to safeguard yourself and others. Speaking to a lawyer can instantly bolster your claims and help you get what’s owed. If you are involved in such a situation, speak to criminal defense attorney Scott Bischoff of Adams & Bischoff.

The Dangers of Drinking and Driving

Alcohol consumption can impair a person’s ability to make sound judgments, react quickly, and coordinate their movements. These effects increase the likelihood of traffic accidents, which can result in significant harm, including injury or death. People generally drive recklessly under the influence, and since reflexes are hampered, the chances of taking control during a dire situation are negated.

According to the NHTSA, almost one-third of all fatal accidents involve an impaired driver. Research also indicates that drivers with BAC levels of 0.08% or greater are 4.5 times as likely to be involved in a deadly accident as sober drivers. This changes based on the state that you are in.

Besides causing severe injuries and death, drunk driving is a serious criminal offense. A driver could face significant fines, jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, and other penalties if convicted. It can have repercussions on a person’s life professionally and at a personal level.

How to Be Safe During the Holidays

Plan Ahead

The holidays often bring an abundance of social gatherings, many of which may involve alcohol. To prepare for these scenarios, it’s important to plan ahead on how to handle the risk of drinking and driving. Driving cautiously on the road is extremely important.

The best option is to designate a sober driver if you plan to consume alcohol at a party. This individual should either abstain from drinking altogether or limit their alcohol intake to well below the legal limit for drivers in your state.

Be Accountable

Before heading out with friends, plan your return home and stay committed to your plan.

If a friend has been drinking, it’s best to intervene and prevent them from getting behind the wheel. Gently but firmly request their car keys and make arrangements for alternative transportation.

Use a Ride-Sharing App

Today there are various smartphone apps available for passengers and drivers. These are sometimes referred to as ride-sharing apps or taxi apps. Some of them include Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar.

Therefore, if you start drinking unexpectedly and decide you cannot drive home,

use one of these apps to get to your destination safely. You can schedule a ride in advance so you will not be left stranded when you have too much to drink.

If You Get Involved in an Accident with a Drunk Driver

Dealing with drunk driving accusations can be difficult for all parties involved. It is important to find a representative dedicated to defending your rights and pursuing the best possible outcome. By carefully examining the evidence and constructing a solid defense strategy, a criminal defense attorney will represent you in court and fight for a favorable resolution while safeguarding your rights.

Conclusion

Stay safe this holiday season by planning ahead and making responsible choices. Designate a sober driver, use ride-sharing apps, and intervene if a friend has been drinking. By taking these precautions, you can help prevent tragedies and ensure a safer holiday season for everyone on the road. Remember, your actions can save lives.
