Linklaters has bolstered its Energy sector offering with the appointment of Joanna Addison, who joins as the firm’s new Global Sector Lead for Energy Transition.

Joanna Addison has an impressive track record and is recognised as a leading individual in the sector, she was previously Head of Legal for Shell in Qatar and before that partner at Herbert Smith Freehills.

This strategic appointment adds a wealth of expertise to Linklaters’ Energy sector, bringing over twenty years’ experience in the project development, operations, and acquisition and disposal of all aspects of the energy value chain, both conventional oil and gas and power, as well as energy transition projects including carbon capture, usage and storage. Joanna will be based in London but will have a global focus, including drawing on her vast expertise in the Middle East.

Chris Staples, Corporate partner in Linklaters’ Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure practice and co-head of the firm’s Global Commodities group, commented:

“We are committed to being at the forefront in supporting clients across the Energy sector, especially when it comes to the energy transition. Welcoming Joanna to our impressive global bench of practitioners is exciting. She has a wealth of in-house and private practice experience, combined with her involvement with Shell Qatar’s country and business leadership teams, offering a unique combination of profound legal and commercial knowledge that is designed to enhance Linklaters’ client offering and bring an innovative perspective.”

Richard Coar, Energy & Infrastructure partner at Linklaters and co-head of the Renewables and Construction sectors, commented:

“We are thrilled to welcome Joanna to our global platform and look forward to working alongside her. The firm is uniquely positioned to support clients at every stage of their lifecycle, by operating globally, with a deep bench of cross-practice experts coupled with sector and asset knowledge. We are committed to delivering excellence to our clients and finding new and innovative solutions to challenges and opportunities is at the heart of what we are known for. Joanna’s expertise and wealth of experience further adds to this.”

The firm’s cross-practice Energy sector is uniquely placed to advise on the full lifecycle of assets and operational challenges and has an unrivalled track record advising on the most complex and large-scale transactions – leading on five of the Top 10 European Energy Transition Project Financings and the two largest in Asia, including advising on the cUS$6bn project financing of the Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan and advising Yunneng Wind Power on the restructuring of its €2.9bn financial debt and recapitalisation.

The sector continues to dominate global rankings, ranked no.1 on Global Infrastructure Finance, Global Renewables Financing, Global Mining Infrastructure Financing, Global Telecoms Infrastructure Financing and European Power Infrastructure Financing (deal value and volume) by IJ Global 2023, with 158 deals worth a total of US$153.2bn. The firm also won 15 awards at the IJGlobal Awards and was ranked as Band 1 in Chambers Global for multijurisdictional global projects and energy.
