5 Tips on Gathering Evidence at the Scene of a Car Accident

By Legal Desire 4 Min Read

Although you may be distracted, or even distressed, in the immediate aftermath of being involved in a car accident, it is extremely important to try and keep a clear head and focus on what you need to do.

Collecting the right evidence and creating a first-hand record of the event straight after a collision is likely to prove critical to whether you can claim compensation, and how much you can claim.

Once you have checked that you and anyone else involved is safe and okay, there are some things you need to do as quickly as possible. Evidence gathered at the scene will help when you search lawyer for car accident to get the professional legal help you need in these circumstances.

Here are five useful tips to keep in mind.

Get everyone’s details

It is very important to get the names and other details of anyone at the scene who is directly involved or saw what happened and can provide a witness statement at a later date.

You will need the driver’s details of any other vehicle that was involved in the collision. That includes their driver license details and insurance information.

In addition, you should try to collect the name and address details of any witnesses to the accident.

Take plenty of photos

It’s a very good idea to take as many photos of the scene as possible. This will add context to the circumstances and also help to verify your version of events by providing physical photographic evidence.

Focus on photos of damage to the car, where the vehicle came to rest, and any skid marks on the road that could help determine how the accident unfolded.

Liaise with the police at the scene

As well as providing the police officer attending the scene with all of your driver details it would be wise to get their name and badge number in exchange.

The police officer might give you a crime reference number at the scene. Make sure you note these details as it will make it easier to follow up at a later date when your lawyer requests a copy of the accident report.

Go for a medical check

Even if you think you are okay and not badly injured it is always advisable to seek medical attention and get confirmation of the extent of your injuries.

It can sometimes take days or weeks for injuries to come to light. By getting a medical report straight after the accident you help strengthen your ability to claim compensation at a later date.

Keep a journal

It can so often be the case that your own testimony can prove crucial to the outcome of your subsequent legal claim.

Keep a daily journal of any pain or difficulties you experience as a result of the accident. It also helps to keep an accurate record of all of your appointments, medical costs, and any other expenses associated with the accident that you want to claim back at a later date.

Follow these tips and talk to a lawyer as soon as possible. They will be able to use the information and guide you through the process.
