Washington, D.C., Dusseldorf, and Munich, 7 December 2022 – Global law firm Hogan Lovells announced two key leadership changes effective Jan. 1, 2023. Dusseldorf partner Miriam Gundt has been named Global Managing Partner of the Intellectual Property, Media, and Technology (IPMT) practice group, and Munich partner Detlef Hass has been appointed Managing Partner for Germany.
Gundt steps into her role as Global Managing Partner of the IPMT practice replacing Burkhart Goebel, who has led the IPMT practice since 2018, and will return to focus on his practice. Hass takes on the role of Managing Partner for Germany, overseeing offices in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich. Stefan Schuppert, who led Germany since 2018, will return to focus on his practice.
“Both Miriam and Detlef bring extensive leadership experience and great energy to their positions, and I am very happy to welcome them to our global leadership team,” said Hogan Lovells CEO Miguel Zaldivar.
“I’d also like to thank Burkhart and Stefan for their contributions,” Zaldivar said. “Under Burkhart’s leadership, our IPMT practice has grown to represent more than half of the world’s top 100 brands. And Stefan led through a period of great growth in Germany, which with its combined offices, is our third-largest economic engine, after Washington, D.C. and London.”
IPMT
Gundt is recognized as a “go-to” lawyer for the coordination of international patent disputes and the enforcement of intellectual property rights in various European jurisdictions. She has served as the Practice Area Leader for IPMT EMEA since 2020, and was lead partner for Diversity & Inclusion in Europe from 2018 to 2021. Gundt joined Hogan Lovells’ Dusseldorf office in 2006 and became partner in the IPMT practice in 2015.
“I am excited to take on this new global IPMT role, building on the tremendous success of our practice group under Burkhart’s leadership,” Gundt said. “We are recognized as a premier firm for complex, multijurisdictional matters, and I am honored to be the next leader of a group that already has achieved such strong recognition in the market.”
Goebel has more than 25 years of experience helping clients navigate complex cross-border IP litigation. He has handled matters before courts in almost every jurisdiction in Europe, including some of the largest multijurisdictional disputes in history. Goebel served as Regional Managing Partner for Continental Europe before becoming Managing Partner – IPMT. He joined the firm in 1997 as a lawyer in the firm’s Hamburg office.
Germany
Hass is an accomplished commercial litigation partner who is widely recognized as a pioneer for his approach to high-profile commercial conflicts in Germany, including in the key area of supply chain disruption issues. He led Hogan Lovells’ global Manufacturing, Energy, and Industrials (MEI) sector group since 2018, and before that was the head of the firm’s Continental Europe Commercial Litigation practice until 2016, building a leading pan-European litigation practice. He joined the firm in 1994.
“I am very grateful to Stefan for his leadership in the last several years, as the firm has risen to become recognized as one of the top law firms in Germany,” said Hass. “With our strengths across key industry sectors, including automotive, financial services, energy, technology, and life sciences, we look forward to fueling further growth.”
Schuppert has an extensive background advising clients on data protection and information technology projects. Before becoming the Managing Partner for Germany, he led the firm’s largest German office in Munich for nine years. He took on the role of Co-Diversity & Inclusion sponsoring partner for EMEA in 2022 – a role he will continue to hold. He joined Hogan Lovells in 1996.
