Construction Accidents and Why They Can Be Fatal

By Legal Desire 6 Min Read

Construction accidents are unfortunate incidents that happen unexpectedly or unintentionally, resulting in damage or injury at construction sites. They are among the main causes of death in the United States.

These accidents are usually fatal because of the nature of the work happening there. Construction workers mostly work with heavy machinery, on high scaffolding, or with harmful and toxic chemicals.

Common Accidents at Construction Sites

There are several potential hazards on construction sites. Hence, these accidents can happen to anyone, regardless of experience. That’s why it’s critical to be careful when working or walking along a construction site. Potential mishaps include:

Falling From Heights

Falls can happen when you are working on scaffolding, roofs, or while working with heavy machinery. If you fall from a height, you may suffer severe physical injuries or even death.

Being Struck by an Object

That can happen when you are working with power tools or other machinery. If something falls from a height, it can also strike you. Being hit by an object can cause serious injuries, including broken bones and head injuries.

Exposure to Hazardous Materials.

Construction sites often contain asbestos, lead, and other dangerous materials. If you are exposed to these materials, it can cause serious health problems, including cancer.

Electrocution

It can happen when working with power tools or other electrical equipment. If you come into contact with a live wire, it can electrocute you and cause serious injuries or even death.

Safety While Working on a Construction Site

Always follow the safety rules and regulations while working on a construction site. Be aware of your surroundings. Always know the no-go zones during construction. It is also advisable to know where safe exits are in an emergency. If you see any unsafe conditions, report them to your supervisor immediately. That allows room for corrections.

Remember, prevention is better than cure. Wear the proper safety gear, such as hard hats, gloves, and steel-toe boots always. If you are working with power tools, ensure that all cords are in good condition and that you are using the proper safety precautions. When working in a high place, always use the proper safety harnesses.

If you are exposed to hazardous materials, ensure that you wear the proper protective gear. That includes masks, gloves, and clothing that covers your skin. Never work alone. Have someone available to assist you in case of an accident.

Things to Do in the Event of an Accident

If you are injured, seek medical attention immediately. Do not try to tough it out. Construction accidents can cause internal injuries, and you need to get medical attention as soon as possible.

If someone else is injured, call 911. Do not try to move them yourself, as this could cause further injury. Report the accident to your supervisor. It is vital for insurance and keeping track of accidents on the job site.

It is also essential for the authorities to be notified so an investigation can occur. An experienced NY construction accident lawyer can help you understand and analyze your options and rights.

  • Fill out an accident report. This will be used by your employer and their insurance company.
  • Get witnesses’ details, such as contact information and statements. They may be able to provide valuable information about what happened.
  • Take photos. If you can, take photos of the injuries, the accident scene, and the object that caused the injuries. Such photos can be helpful evidence later on.
  • File an accident report. Employers use such reports to file claims with their respective insurance companies.

You may be entitled to compensation benefits if you get injuries in a construction accident. These benefits are critical because they can cater to your medical expenses and lost wages. If someone else’s negligence caused the accident, the law gives you room to file for a personal injury lawsuit.

Mark Scott

With a law degree under his belt, Mark Scott understood very early that law communication was a relatively neglected area. He decided to help people by “translating” the language and offering information and advice in a clear, useful, and actionable manner. For this reason, instead of finding him in court, you will most likely find his name online, where he is very active and thriving as a legal columnist. His part of making the world a better place is to make the law a less convoluted maze. He aims to make it easier for people to understand when and how to seek legal counsel, how to proceed in a significant number of legal matters, and to find the proper resources so they can stand up for their rights.
