Dentons has advised the UK Government on interventions in the energy markets to reduce energy bills for households and businesses. New powers to make these interventions were established in the Energy Prices Act 2022.
The Government recently launched the Energy Price Guarantee for households, the Energy Bill Relief Scheme for businesses and the extension of the Energy Bill Support Scheme to Northern Ireland.
Dentons mobilised a team of lawyers from energy, public law, and various other disciplines from across our UK firm to undertake this significant project, which is ongoing. Dentons also brought in Tughans law firm in Northern Ireland to advise on the Northern Irish and all-island legal and regulatory considerations relevant to the various schemes.
The scope of both firms’ involvement has been very broad – with teams working closely with The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) own legal team in supporting policy development and the preparation of legislation, scheme documents and contracts.
The Dentons team is led by London-based Christopher McGee-Osborne, who is co-chair of the Firm’s global energy and global government practices, and energy partner Charles Wood. Christopher commented: “This is obviously work of real national importance undertaken at considerable pace. Our team has been delighted to be able to use our expertise in the energy markets and public law background to support BEIS to deliver work that will make a great difference to so many people and businesses.”
