6 Secrets of Criminal Defense Attorneys

By Legal Desire 5 Min Read

As you may know, the job of a criminal defense attorney is to employ their best criminal defense tactics, analyze the facts and the circumstances of the case they are given and, ultimately, defend their client in the court of law.

Naturally, since we are talking about criminal cases, it takes more than skill and moral certainty to be a criminal defense attorney. They have to also rely on certain secrets, particular or special laws, as well as on their experience – rather than simply on knowledge.

As such, here are six secrets of criminal defense attorneys that they may use to keep you out of prison!

Jurors’ Backgrounds

Naturally, a good criminal defense attorney will always analyze the backgrounds of the jurors to find out who can be swayed and so on. On top of that, when they quiz possible participants, they will also make sure that no one that exposes their natural biases stays in the jury box.

Lastly, the attorney won’t question those who can keep an open mind, so as not to reveal the natural biases to the prosecutor.

Standing Close to Their Clients

Most people think that the attorney stands so close to their client while the verdict is being read to show solidarity. In fact, as most criminal defense attorneys say, it’s for the support of both attorney and client.

For example, clients may get convicted and pass out due to emotions. The same can happen to an attorney when his client is sentenced to life in prison or death.

Client Makeover

Usually, criminal defense attorneys will take the time and take a good look at their clients – in terms of clothing, haircut and so on.

It’s not that they have something with your way of dressing or looking, they simply believe that you must show respect for the system, as it can help you get better results.

As such, a proper attorney will not let you enter the courtroom with ripped jeans, unkempt hair/ beard, and so on.

Client’s Admission of Guilt

Obviously, as most of you probably know, everything that a client talks about with their attorney is protected by the attorney-client privilege.

In short, even if the client admits that they are guilty, the attorney is not obligated to pass that information around. In fact, most attorneys said that, if something like this happens, their only concern would be their client lying on the stand – naturally, they wouldn’t let them do so.

They Love Tough Cases

Unlike other types of attorneys, criminal defense ones have an appetite for tough, complicated cases. This is because, as most people say, criminal defense attorneys thrive on the cases that are hard to win.

This is mainly because their cases are funded by the government and attract a lot of media attention as well. Naturally, this means that they can try any strategy they can think of, without losing anything. On top of that, they can also research the prosecution team, as well as their rivals.

Public Opinions Change Strategies

As mentioned above, criminal cases get a lot of media attention. As such, a good criminal defense attorney will make use of the power of the media – and of what it says – to shape their strategy and, ultimately, win the case.

If the attorney considers the jury as his/her audience and learns to work with the public opinion and to properly present it in the court of law, they can win almost any case they get on their hands.

The Bottom Line

Naturally, criminal defense attorneys come with many more secrets – we can research for more, but the best secrets are, obviously, still in their possession.

Still, the secrets mentioned above provide us with precious insight into the life of a criminal defense attorney. On top of that, if we ever need one, we’ll know what to ask them – using the secrets above – and figure out whether they’re good at what they do or not!
