Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a Petition filed by Indira Jaising, Senior Advocate for live streaming of court proceedings in cases of Public interest and national importance in tune with the public’s right to information.
She told the bench led by Chief Justice of India that court proceedings were open for public viewing on online platforms in western countries. She said that various PILs and cases hold national importance with social impact and they should be available for public view.
The SC had earlier allowed the installation of CCTV video recording with audio in trial courts and tribunals. She said the citizens had the right to information and matters of constitutional and national importance could be live streamed. If live streaming is not possible then video recording should be allowed, so that it can be made available for public view.
“This writ petition is filed as pro bono for enforcement of public interest, to advance the rule of law and bring accountability and transparency in the administration of justice,” she added.
